View Full Version : Yavn: Same Old or Imposter?
GraspingClaw 07-08-2007, 05:32 AM There's been some debate about the legitimacy of the last Newsletter. Was it truly written by Yavn? Or by a ghost-writer hoping to keep up continuity for appearance's sake? In my opinion, we're not being given the real story. The whole turn of events was a tad too suspicious to swallow and I believe we've got a new Yavn Claus at the mall, wearing a fake goatee and feigning a love for all things Churro.
What do you think?
trainz 07-09-2007, 05:45 AM I agree with you! He's way to... DISNEY! The yavn we knew wasn't so much idk about making money for disney. The yavn we knew kinda cared for us and this one seems to care for disney.
Neoteny 07-09-2007, 06:08 AM The last few months of newsletter updates and non-updates have been very confusing. I think you might be on to something with your "new Yavn" theory. Don't they change "Dear Abby" every couple of years? Maybe they do the same thing with "Yavn."

yeah they do in fact their hasnt been an abby writing "dear abby" in years! maybe shes onto something.
Neoteny 07-09-2007, 06:26 AM Yavn might not even be a real person. Maybe he's just a character, like Push or Shrunken Ned, and any staff member can "play" as him.

They do that at the Parks . . . have several different people who play a character (Mickey, Pooh, etc.) so that theory is possible.
MinniesDream 07-09-2007, 02:07 PM OHMIGAWSH! DIFFERENT PEOPLE PLAY POOH?!?!?!?!?
haha.
Anyway, I think you may be onto something here. I was really expecting some updates, but it has just been boring stuff, really.
And is it like yavn to not put an animation on CHURRO stands? Seriously.
~Dani:wub8:
Athena 07-09-2007, 02:22 PM That's what happens. The main goal of VMK is to make money off Disney promos. We come second. Maybe all this fame when to his head.
VMKJen 07-09-2007, 02:22 PM If yavn is other staff members I'm gonna be shocked... I mean.. NO!!! That has to be yavn.. I mean I thought he hired all the staff, I'm sooo confused now :( :(

Nope I took the backstage magic tour many years ago and they told us there is only one Mickey!! :wave2::wave2::pirate::pirate::huh8::huh8::huh8:
I too believe there is way more corporate politics going on than we know and if you had any experience with that you would know this rant may have some validity. Things are definatly not the same as they were a few months ago. Imposter or not, things with Yavn are not like they use to be before.
Yavn might not even be a real person. Maybe he's just a character, like Push or Shrunken Ned, and any staff member can "play" as him.The nickname 'Yavn' has apparently belonged to VMK's lead developer since well before he started with the project. It's not just a made-up-name for use in VMK, but a handle that's pretty firmly associated with a real-life person's identity. He hasn't really made any effort to separate his real name from his 'Yavn' identity, either, so anyone who can use a search engine and has a good concept of how the internet works will run across it pretty quickly.
I really don't understand why so many people are so convinced that something's terribly wrong at vmk. People have been saying 'things are not the same' or 'the magic's gone' or whatever practically since vmk started. When Yavn Speaks was updated every week, people complained that there wasn't enough news in it. Now that it's only updated when there's something to talk about, we complain that it's not frequent enough.
soccerrunner 07-09-2007, 06:00 PM I'm still waiting to hear news about this "huge, exciting summer build" he referred to many newsletters ago. I don't know what's up, but I definitely think his "cover story" from last newsletter doesn't seem legit.
Marysol 07-09-2007, 06:38 PM Yea, I played another game due to fake staff and not updated.
Hmm. Is my VMK Future over.
Bring Back Yavn!!

Jamarocker 07-09-2007, 08:46 PM Maybe there is just no new news to tell us about. It doesn't seem like it should be like that, but if Yavn says it was him. It just seems like there should be something exciting to tell us about, maybe that's just me.

has been a lie D:
*Pauses for several minutes, then snaps out of it*
Errr... Sorry bout that. It happens sometimes. 'Tis why I'm not to good at suspending disbelief during ARGs ;)
Anyhow, I agree with Yavn. It certainly DOESN'T sound like how he normally talks, but... who knows? Maybe he was in a good mood and/or being held hostage or something.
Most likely hostage.

Yavn has spoken!
Interesting theory, anyway.

You certainly can beat that. You can beat that by telling us just what the heck has been going on the past few months. "It was me" is hardly a response at all.
liljesi 07-10-2007, 05:22 AM when did we stop trusting yavn?
lately i've been getting the vibe everyone thinks that vmk and all of vmk staff has gone corrupt or something. but i think vmk is fine.. i quit for a while and then came back, and, other than the improvements to the game, vmk, nor vmk staff, doesn't seem to have changed..

Well, you know... I assume that since they haven't said anything along the lines of "Magic carpet pin: Coming soon!" All the conspiracy theorists need something else to do.
I still stand firm to my belief that there is one and only one Yavn, and that he's being brutally forced to write so cheezily, though.
GraspingClaw 07-11-2007, 12:22 AM Yikes, a direct response. What do you have to say to that, graspingclaw?

What I have to say is that I was completely justified in posing the question and wondering about the validity of the newsletter and its claims. It may indeed be him, but I don't think the surrounding circumstances were any less suspicious. I wasn't the only one to wonder, and for those of us paying attention to detail, things seemed a little askew. There's nothing wrong with questioning and examining things. As you can see, that's how we arrive at answers.
{edit - should be directed towards as moderator via PM}
vacationer 07-11-2007, 08:15 PM i do believe that was yavn although he usually doesnt talk about just churro carts. lol. but there hasn't been news in a while.
i wonder if they are working on something.. maybe something big.
well, its a good theory, but i never expected a response from yavn himself.

What do you mean different people? Everybody knows they use different characters, but of course they took the real Mickey and cloned him. I always knew that..
Anyway, You may be on to something. What could have happened to him, really though? I hope (if this is true, which this is just a theory) that he just got fired or something, and not really sick. I hope Yavn is okay.
plecoguy 07-14-2007, 12:36 AM Yavn may be yavn, but theory numba #2 should make sense.
Maybe it is yavn, but yavn is trying to act as normal as he can under some large secret, or some pressure, or vmk getting it's plug pulled.
So in which case...
CURSE YOU DISNEY!
Cap'n_Leandro 07-14-2007, 12:47 AM Disney is not the same without Walt Disney around. Disney only cares about money. But I DO NOT agree with this thread. Ranting yavn is very wrong! He has a life. And neoteny, shrunken NED IS A REAL PERSON!
Yavn might not even be a real person. Maybe he's just a character, like Push or Shrunken Ned, and any staff member can "play" as him.
Any one staff member COULD play Yavn's character. No one truly knows if Yavn is "One person" or not. It's not like I don't believe it's Yavn, But it's not exactly like I do.
Cover your eyes kids . . .

GraspingClaw 07-21-2007, 05:59 PM Hi there, Junior Detectives! :detective
Well I apologize for my absence on this thread (the mods thought I deserved a little vacation), but I do have some somewhat exciting news.
Some of you may have noticed that the VMK Forums member "Yavn" responded to this thread back on July 9th. In addition to that, he also sent me a PM on the same day, in an attempt to drive home the fact that he's not just a character in costume, but indeed the one and only, turkey-leg loving guy that's been engineering this virtual train from the very beginning.
When I received this PM, I believed it had verified that the registered Yavn on this site is in fact the real Yavn, and so I wrote him back and asked him a few questions, hoping to get a little more insight into what happened and voice some personal concerns I had in regards to the game. He was nice enough to write back, and actually addressed the issues I brought up.
I thought about sharing these earlier, but I didn't get around to it and then I took that unscheduled mod-enforced holiday, so forgive the delay. Of course there's no way to prove that this correspondence actually took place, but I can promise you that every word I received was from Yavn (the VMK forums member) so you may take that any way you choose. When cross-referencing the following information with the newsletter, some of you may find answers to those nagging questions. (Such as, why does his writing style sound different?) Also, after reading last night's newsletter, it seems our exchange may have had a small effect on what he addressed. So now, without further ado, I give you "Letters to Yavn!"
The following took place between July 9th, 2:40PM and July 10th, 2:32PM:
Just to be clear I'm still around and did not get fired or quit. I'm not writing as often as I did, but I'm still here.
Perhaps a better question is what have I been working on that's keeping me so busy...
Yavn
*tugs on goatee*
Hmm.. I suppose it could be you. But you can't blame me for wondering, the way everything unfolded.
I'm sure you guys are hard at work on something great, as I'm always very pleased by the new artwork/lands, but you know what I really and truly wish you guys worked on more? The Dictionary.
I'm not sure if you've caught my thread "Words We Need: A Dictionary Booster", ( http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116836 ) but this is just a small sample of the many words we should be able to say. I know some of them are "controversial" because they have the potential to be used inappropriately, but wouldn't it be better to punish the offender, as opposed to the masses? Even if we don't see eye to eye on that, there are a LOT of completely harmless and helpful words that could and should be added. (Cartoon, Whom, They've, Twice, etc.) I know we have an option to suggest a word in Contact Us, but I think we both know it doesn't work that well. If it did, words would be constantly added, as I know there are many great suggestions out there. Frankly, even if it did work better, it would take a very long time to get the list of words we should have. We're in need of a big ol' booster pack, and that thread I linked you to is a great place to start.
Sorry for rambling on about the issue, but it's very important to me and many other users. If this is the one and only Yavn, I know you're very busy, so I appreciate any time or attention you can give to the matter. As a final request, can we PLEASE have the ability to organize the pins on our lanyard? I want to be able to arrange them in specific orders and patterns, instead of them being randomly scattered. As someone who suffers from mild OCD, that would make the game so much brighter for me. It's little changes like these that would make a big difference to a lot of players. Thanks for listening. :)
Claw,
I'll have a look at the dictionary and try to add as many as we can. At the end of the day it's a no win since many good words do get abused. But I hear you, it's time for more to be added.
The lanyard is not so easy. We asked for the from the beginning but it's not as easy to do as we had hoped. I wanted to make a series of pins that put together was a larger image (think of something like a mural made of 15 pins) but it's on hold until we can sort that out.
The timing of the Disneyland kiosk closing had nothing to do with me being quiet, it just appears so. As I've said before I've been busy on moderation issues and how to make that part of the game run better. Think of it as my summer project! Of course we are building more stuff, but I can't say what or when you will see it.
As a last thought remember that Yavn is me, not something invented by Disney. I've used Yavn on most of my games and the URL belongs to me also, so even if you think it's not me it really is. Being that I'm not the greatest writer I work with several editors and a few weeks ago someone new edited Yavn Speaks, so that's why it felt different.
I do need to write something for this week, but it won't have too many new items to show so don't be too disappointed if it feels lite.
Yavn
I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond, and specifically addressing the issues mentioned. You just scored a lot of points as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking the English language is woefully under-represented in our current dictionary and that you're working on a fix for the Curse of the Jumbled Lanyard. The response you gave is exactly what I wish we got more of in the newsletter: open and direct communication.
I'm not one of those people who's disappointed by a lack of new pictures and items in the newlsetter; in fact, I'd rather be surprised by just logging on and finding it on the game. Obviously there are many people out there who don't feel the same way and need those "spoilers" to tide them over until the actual release, so I understand the focus being on those matters. But the best thing anyone could possibly do for this game, is clearly illustrating that you and your staff value our thoughts and suggestions (apart from what our favorite sea creature is).
I'm sure you've heard of "Contact Us" being referred to as a "Black Hole", and I think many people are disheartend by the generic or non-existent responses they get after writing in. Perhaps in addition to these "Picture" events with Hosts, we could also get some Q&A sessions with Testers and Programmers, to pick their brain a little and see what they're working on. I know I'd be much more interested in waiting in a line of 500 people if I had the opportunity to voice an issue or ask a question regarding the game, and know that it's beign answered by someone with the authority to do so. It could be a kind of Town Hall meeting, with the citizens being able to speak directly with their elected officials.
I know you've opened up Yavn's Mailbag from time to time, but I really feel that it should be a regular feature. Even if you don't have the time, or the necessary material, to fill up an entire update, answering some questions from readers every week would be an awesome way of showing the users that you hear their feedback and care about their suggestions. Just try to ignore the many inquiries about Flying Carpet Magic. (When is that coming out by the way? ;))
In any case, thank you again for your response. It meant a lot. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me sharing some of this information with the other users on the site? I'd love to quote the section about the Dictionary in my Booster thread and tell people to keep hope alive!

Sonicblur 07-21-2007, 06:30 PM Hmmm... that's not a bad bit of information there. It appears to be the real yavn, so there really isn't an imposter. This is quite interesting, and from what it sounds like he's really trying to fix the game up and give updates. Bravo yavn, way to go for all your efforts. ;) And hopefully a lot of the updates everyone has mentioned could be used in the game. And the idea of a mural made of pins is brilliant. An amazing idea really. I would definatly want a mural made of pins. :D Also, fixing where your pins are in your lanyard is a good idea too. Hopefully all of this will work out.
Sonicblur~ :StitchBounce-1:
JazzyJelly 07-22-2007, 11:32 AM I think there is one main Yavn but he must use some heavy editing or task someone to write updates sometimes.
skipper 07-22-2007, 11:51 AM It's the same yavn, he just is trying to get us lots of good stuff fast ( not taking time to give animations ) to make up for not updating the newsletter, hey he might sound different but dont we as we get older? I mean he is waiting to update the newsletter when we have something to talk about and like when he has made lots of items for us, look at the popcorn cart that is coming out , then tons of other stuff before we know it we will have 9,000 vmk items to talk about then 90,000, Yavn would not be replaced, his newsletter is probally edited just to help it look better, even though it sounds different, it is him, if you dont believe so I do and I will always know that he is Yavn, even if items don't have animations, I mean maybe the churro cart was not supose to be animated, maybe the popcorn cart will not be, there still cool items, so just because Yavn sounds different does not mean he is or has changed, but every one changes, even if he does change he will not be replaced and that is what I have to say

Lol yes Ink and I met yavn. Like he said in the newsletter he is working on alot of things right now. and he said a newsletter about every month. or something like that. That is what i thought he said in this Weeks newsletter.
*Edit:* People never really think what would it be like if you were in his shoes? you would be so busy you don't even have time for anything. I am sure yavn is doing his best to try to inform us with info but if people want new stuff like builds,Guest Rooms,New lands, Etc.. Yavn and the VMK team have to work HARD.
One question for everyone:
When was the last time you thought of how much work they did on something like NEW guest rooms,Lands,Builds, rides Ect..?
I am sure the VMK team works as hard as they can. What i am trying to say is, Yavn is a busy man and has alot to think about and do. Remember: he has a family and he cant always just work on VMK i am sure he trys his best.
I just want to thank ALL of the member of the VMK Team,Staff, etc. For what they do. (Remember their jobs are not easy)

Mentioning that the newsletter seemed to have a different style of writing and complaining that its not written by Yavn are two different things. Its a perfectly legitimate thing to speculate on and comment on. Its just something some of us noticed. It is separate from how I feel about VMK. I would never hinge my whole VMK experience on one person!

oh yes one more comment. Yavn met CL_Slinkyman in real life. I doubt they would send out a fake guy. there is only one yavn.
Hi,
As the parent of CL_Slinkyman I also spent an entire day with Smalld and Ink, Yavn, Caffdawg and met a few others of the VMK team.
Yavn is not pixels on the screen. He is a real genuine down to Earth person. He was a wonderful host that day and we had a day we will remember for always. As someone who has corresponded with him in the past when he writes he is a man of few words. In person we all talked the day away. He is passionate about VMK I could tell by watching him speak about the game. Don't be fooled he cares about the game and the players. When he explained some of the reasons why they do things it made sense. We talked about many things but we did not feel it was right to ask him about up coming big things in VMK. After all we were there to enjoy his and dawgs company not interrogate them :)
Many of you know of Ink Small and myself some of you don't. I wrote a complete trip report about Ink's trip as meeting Yavn was just a part of it. We took many pictures that day and we talked to Yavn about doing a trip report and he gave permission for us to use their pictures in the report. I contacted the mods asking permission to post the report as I knew this would be big so many people have wanted to see what they look like. Forums would not allow it since it included real life pictures. So sadly I was not able to share with you pictures of our wonderful day with part of the VMK team but rest assured they are as real as you and I. They have feelings, families, hobbies, work hard and read the fan sites. Please don't be so hard on them.... Great things could be around the corner you never know...
Thanks for all your hard work VMK team!
Bug
GraspingClaw 07-23-2007, 04:22 PM I don't think anyone is doubting that there is an actual Yavn, and that there is/was indeed a person behind the pixels. The only question was whether or not he had been replaced at VMK, and if someone else had recently assumed the role of Yavn for continuity's sake. Even if Yavn had quit or been fired from VMK, he would obviously go on existing in the world. So yes, we know he's real, and yes, we know he went on a trip with Ink, but that in no way guarantees that he will always be at the helm of this game.
Anyway, due to recent events, I do personally believe Yavn is his same old self. I had doubts there for a while, but those have largely been addressed and erased.
Has anyone actually read the letters I got from Yavn earlier in the post? I think they're kind of interesting, and yet only one person has referenced them so far. Check out Post #31 and take a minute to read. I know it's a little lengthy, but it might help you form a more educated opinion on the matter.

Yavn is real by the fact CL_slinkyman met him. He is real, but it might be true that he DOESN'T do the newsletter anymore.
yes, yavn and a few other staff members went and saw CL_slinkyman which means he is real lol.
Hi,
As the parent of CL_Slinkyman I also spent an entire day with Smalld and Ink, Yavn, Caffdawg and met a few others of the VMK team.
Bug Yes, Yavn and the team act like very nice people, you might think they are doing stuff that you think are dumb or no reason for it, but think for a while, you'll get an answer to probably all of them lol.

Yavn
This Message From Yavn Above Me Might Just Be Saying That To Protect VMK And The Population. We know how the game works and I'm sorry if this might sound offensive, but we only want the honest truth.

I don't think you're really even yavn...
There are lots of people out there who pretend to be Brittany Spears online and stuff like that.

Yes I agree, EVERY STAFF MEMBER holds each other's login information so when you see yavn, you might think it is him, but in reality it could be HOST_Phinny @_@....:(

Well as you can see, yavn is no staff member, really he more makes vmk much cooler and he is the one who makes all those Cloths look cool and what not. yavn might ba a staff somehow but i think he might just be a bot. i have asked HOST_PHINNY about this and she said that she is not a bot. maybe yavn is a bot that makes updats acccording to the real vmk staff members. also if possible if yavn was a real staff member he would be woking in walt disney world thats where most of the staff work. hope i could help:xmikec:

Yavn is a producer of the game VMK, along with many others.
No, yavn is not a bot. I know of a few people that have met yavn in person.

awsomered 02-16-2008, 07:24 PM hey so how do we know thats really yavn
I mean saying some guy in the newsletter is some person who's been hired
with this case it could be some kid thinking he could be funny and say he's yavn
CosmicFireDude 02-19-2008, 01:40 PM I have a question, was that really yavn that posted that message
black33 02-19-2008, 01:46 PM ^^ Yes It was ^^ He has an account here, but usually isn't on it..
but i have a question,
Hasn't Slinkeyman met Yavn in person? Just ask him if yavn is real or not.. he can clear up all this confusion for you!
PrincessWall 02-19-2008, 02:44 PM Yavn did write that, I guess, but it was on 7/9/2007. That was more than a few months ago.
And Black33, we all know that Yavn is a real person. Slinkyman MET him. The question is, is it STILL the same Yavn that met SlinkyMan?
♥Wall

No, the question is, why do we care?
Yavn works at VMK. They can't make him leave because he knows too much about VMK. Whether he actually writes the newsletter anymore doesn't matter. We still get previews and information. Who cares if he writes the newsletter or not?
All this being said, I personally believe that he still writes Yavn Speaks.
tronboy 03-30-2008, 04:03 PM It was me, no imposter...
Yavn
