View Full Version : Brain Teasers!
Jediviper 09-26-2005, 04:07 AM Howdy people!
I just love brain teasers so I thought I would share some with everyone. Feel free to try to answer them or if you know a good one post it here.
I'll start with a couple of easy ones:
1.) Imagine you are in a house where all the walls face south...
... a bear walks past the window...
... what color is the bear?
2.) There are three houses built exactly the same. One is filled with cotton, the other with wood, and the third with iron. One day an arsonist sets them all on fire. Sirens were loudly coming to the scene. People were screaming. Which house did the ambulance try to put the fire out at first?
Have fun!
Ranch 09-26-2005, 04:10 AM 1. black?
2. and I'll guess the wood one cause it will coal the longest?
pm the answers if you don't mind
cool game!
QuestKyle 09-26-2005, 04:10 AM i think...
1# white (it's a polar bear)
2# dosn't matter 'cause they all look the same one the outside so how can they tell.
am I right? :)
Jediviper 09-26-2005, 04:16 AM 1. black?
2. and I'll guess the wood one cause it will coal the longest?
Wrong on both... sorry, keep trying. :)
1# white (it's a polar bear)
2# dosn't matter 'cause they all look the same one the outside so how can they tell.
#1 Is correct, if you are in a house where all sides face south then you have to be at the North Pole. The only bear you might possibly see would be a polar bear.
#2 Is not right... keep trying. :)
Appleson 09-26-2005, 04:16 AM #2-it doesn't matter because they're all built the same way
smilezlie 09-26-2005, 04:29 AM #2....ambulances dont put out fires lol. so none of them. that would be the job of mr firetruck. :)
StevoStitch 09-26-2005, 04:38 AM #2 - the iron one, because the cotton and wood ones would have burned down by the time it got there.
Ranch 09-26-2005, 04:38 AM I got one:
Say "Silk" 7 times really fast!!
what do cows drink?
Jediviper 09-26-2005, 04:50 AM #2....ambulances dont put out fires lol. so none of them. that would be the job of mr firetruck. :)
Correct! A little tricky, that one, lol. ;)
OK since those went pretty fast lets try a few more. Just a bit harder this time...
... we'll try some rebus' (for those of you who don't know a rebus uses words or letters in interesting orientations to represent common phrases.)
1.) 12:45PM - To Kill a Mockingbird
2.) ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQUSTRVWXYZ
3.) Decipher the musical instruments represented below?
a. P O
b. BA BA
c. ECLART
d. @ # $ %
Wiggins 09-26-2005, 04:54 AM 3. a. piano?
disneyrocks 09-26-2005, 04:59 AM 1.??
2. You are out of order ( the U and R are out of order )
3. a. Piano

Appleson 09-26-2005, 05:00 AM 2-"you are out of order" or "out of order"
3c-clarinet?
3d-cymbols?
Bell Fan 09-26-2005, 05:01 AM a. piano b.bass c.clarenet d.what duh???
Jediviper 09-26-2005, 05:13 AM Doing well so far...
3. a. piano?
Correct! :)
2. You are out of order ( the U and R are out of order )
b. tuba
c. clarinet
d. cymbols?
Also correct! :)
...nobody has #1 yet...
Jediviper 09-26-2005, 03:42 PM OK, Since I am going to be at work all day, I thought I would post a few more for you all to work on...
First a couple more rebus'.
1.) 1/3 x Rabbits foot
2.) What color is this: BRLEUDE
Then a few questions.
3.) What is at the center of both Australia and America?
4.) A girl went up to her dad and asked for a dollar. The man responds, "Only if you do what I tell you to do. Say that pigs can fly."
The girl nodded and said, "Pigs can fly." The dad shook his head no.
What was the response he wanted?
5.) The local high school has a rule against married students in the school. Betty Jones is there every day in the classroom, yet she is married. How could this be, if Betty is married, yet still in the high school?
6.) You have 25 black socks and 26 white socks in a drawer. Your power is out and you are in total darkness. What is the lowest number of socks you would have to pull out to guarantee making a matching pair?
7.) You have two US coins that total $.55; one of them is not a nickel. What are the two coins?
8.) Change the number l0l0l0l to 950 by moving only one digit.
9.) There was a table with 4 different kinds of fruit -- 3 apples, 6 oranges, 2 mangoes and 5 pears. Each kind of fruit was in a different colored bowl -- red, blue, green and yellow.
You know that:
The blue bowl does not have apples.
The red bowl does not have 5 pieces of fruit.
The green bowl does not have mangoes.
The yellow bowl has more pieces of fruit than the blue bowl.
If you take 1 piece of fruit from each bowl, how many pieces of fruit will you have?
Have fun, I hope to see all the answers by the time I get back tonight! ;)
EDIT: Added one very important word to #6. Fixed incorrect currency amount for #7.
Wiggins 09-26-2005, 04:54 PM Here are some of my guesses...
3. the letter "r"
4. "that pigs can fly"
5. Betty is a teacher
6. two
7. quarters
Jediviper 09-26-2005, 05:09 PM Here are some of my guesses...
3. the letter "r"
4. "that pigs can fly"
5. Betty is a teacher
6. two
7. quarters
#'s 3, 4 and 5 are correct. :) #6 I made an error while typing that one, go back and look at my edit. #7 totally correct for what I had typed... however, on that one I made an even bigger error than on #6, go back and check out the edit and try again. :Embar:
smilezlie 09-26-2005, 09:15 PM 6. 3 socks. the first sock you get is either white or black. the 2nd sock can also be either white or black. since pulling only 2 socks could mean one black one and one white one if you pull out a 3rd sock it could be either white or black, making at least one complete matching pair.
7.A fifty cent piece and a nickel. One is a nickel and the other isn't.
8.Take the last digit and place it on top of the third digit sideways to make l0T0l0...read it and it says 10 TO 10, aka 9:50...meaning 950.
9.you have 12 pieces of fruit. all together you had 16 pieces of fruit. each fruit was in its own bowl so the color of the bowl does not matter. if you take one piece of fruit from each of the 4 bowls its just 16-4=12. right?
Taryn 09-27-2005, 01:01 AM 1.) 12:45PM - To Kill a Mockingbird
I think I'm going to die if you don't post the answer to this! I've learned absolutely nothing in school today because I couldn't get it out of my head, and I STILL couldn't figure it out!
Appleson 09-27-2005, 01:30 AM 1.) blue red or red blue
6.) 51 socks
7.) a half dollar and a nickel-because the half dollar isn't a nickel
8.) l0T0l0 (put a line on top of the 2nd 1, refering to time as in "ten to ten", which is 9:50)
9.) 5 fruit
Jediviper 09-27-2005, 04:46 AM 6. 3 socks. the first sock you get is either white or black. the 2nd sock can also be either white or black. since pulling only 2 socks could mean one black one and one white one if you pull out a 3rd sock it could be either white or black, making at least one complete matching pair.

OK, #'s 6, 7, and 8 are correct... on #9 you are on the right track, but not quite at the right answer. :)
I think I'm going to die if you don't post the answer to this! I've learned absolutely nothing in school today because I couldn't get it out of my head, and I STILL couldn't figure it out!
I want to give people a little more time to figure it out ;), if no one has it by tomorrow night I will post the answer.
1.) blue red or red blue
6.) 51 socks
7.) a half dollar and a nickel-because the half dollar isn't a nickel
8.) l0T0l0 (put a line on top of the 2nd 1, refering to time as in "ten to ten", which is 9:50)
9.) 5 fruit
#'s 7 and 8 are correct (although smilezlie did beat you to the post ;))
For #1 you are on the right track... keep trying. :)
Here are the rebus' we are still looking for answer to:
1.) 1/3 x Rabbits foot
2.) What color is this: BRLEUDE
3.) 12:45PM - To Kill A Mocking Bird
...and the question we still don't have the correct answers for:
1.) There was a table with 4 different kinds of fruit -- 3 apples, 6 oranges, 2 mangoes and 5 pears.
I will try to post some new ones tomorrow morning. Tomorrow night I will answer any of the above that have not been answered. :)
Taryn 09-27-2005, 04:49 AM I want to give people a little more time to figure it out ;), if no one has it by tomorrow night I will post the answer.
Oh great, another sleepless night ;) I'll be counting the SECONDS, lol
Edit: 1.) 1/3 x Rabbits foot= Three Times Lucky!
Edit Again:
1.) There was a table with 4 different kinds of fruit -- 3 apples, 6 oranges, 2 mangoes and 5 pears.
Is it just me, or is the color of the bowl irrevelent? Wouldn't the answer just be 12?
Wiggins 09-27-2005, 04:54 AM 2.) What color is this: BRLEUDE
purple?
Jediviper 09-27-2005, 04:58 AM Oh great, another sleepless night ;) I'll be counting the SECONDS, lol
LOL, Sorry about that. ;)
Edit: 1.) 1/3 x Rabbits foot= Three Times Lucky!
Soooooo close, remember rebus' are meant to represent a popular, or often used word or phrase. :)
Edit Again:
Is it just me, or is the color of the bowl irrevelent? Wouldn't the answer just be 12?
Once again, so close it hurts... take another look at the exact wording of the question...
2.) What color is this: BRLEUDE
purple?
Correct! There's one we can scratch off the list. :) The answer is purple becasue it is RED mixed with BLUE, get it? ;)
Taryn 09-27-2005, 05:00 AM OH lol, Third Times a charm! Haha, for some reason I totally thought three times lucky was a phrase...but thats my brain for you, always making up random stuff ;) And don't worry about the sleepless night, I'm sure I won't fall asleep in TOO many classes tomorrow, seeing as how I'll be too busy trying to think up the answer to 12:45PM- To Kill a Mockingbird
Edit: AHHH!! YOU WILL HAVE 4 PIECES OF FRUIT!!!! YES!
Edit once more: Man, I love these things :D
Bell Fan 09-27-2005, 05:02 AM i think 11
Jediviper 09-27-2005, 05:07 AM OH lol, Third Times a charm! Yeah! There you go... I knew the answer was almost there. :)
Two more we can scatch off the list, just that one last stuborn rebus to go... lol. :)
i think 11
?? What question do you think that is the answer to? I'm so confused...
Bell Fan 09-27-2005, 05:09 AM the fruit 1
Taryn 09-27-2005, 05:09 AM just that one last stuborn rebus to go... lol. :)
You're telling ME, lol :D Well, I should probably go to bed so I can contemplate for a few hours....Night!
disneyrocks 09-27-2005, 05:10 AM #2 PURPLE?? because red and blue make pruple?
CaliDreamin 09-27-2005, 05:12 AM Is it too early to start a new riddle? Well here goes anyway. I will give you a part of the story and you will have to figure out the rest by me answering your questions with a yes or no. Ok here goes.........
A ranger found a cabin in the woods with 4 dead people inside. What happened?
Jediviper 09-27-2005, 05:13 AM the fruit 1
Oh, OK... well unfortunately that is incorrect.
Taryn got the correct answer of 4... there were four bowls total, regardless of the color of the bowls, or how many of what fruit are in them, if you take one piece from each of the four bowls you will have four pieces.
CalamityJane 09-27-2005, 01:09 PM Howdy people!

CalamityJane
Taryn 09-27-2005, 01:09 PM Well gee! An ambulance putting out a fire would be a sight. :wave2:
Haha, correct but a little late ;)
Jediviper 09-27-2005, 03:58 PM OK, once again I have to work all day so here is a bunch for you all to work on...

2.) S-n-o-w
3.) Salt: Good morning
Pepper: Hello
4.)
T M C
A U O
H S M
W T E
5.) doCTOR
Then a few more questions...
1.) It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time. This little test should help you get started.
During a visit to a mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criteria is that defines if a patient should be institutionalized.
"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask the patient to empty the bathtub."
Okay, here's your test:
1. Would you use the spoon?
2. Would you use the teacup?
3. Would you use the bucket?
So, are you crazy? How would you choose to empty the tub?
2.) A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes out of his wallet.
He turns to the rich man and says to him,
"I have an amazing talent: I know almost every song that has ever existed."
The rich man laughs.
The poor man says, "I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady's name of your choice in it."
The rich man laughs again and says, "OK how about my daughters name, Joanna Armstrong-Miller."
The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.
What song did he sing?
3.)
1) Get a brown, cardboard box.
2) Get purple, orange, and turquoise paints.
3) Paint the box orange.
4) Paint on purple spots.
5) Paint on turquoise stripes.
7) Turn it upside down.

What is missing from this sequence?

A ranger found a cabin in the woods with 4 dead people inside. What happened?
It's never too early for a new one! :)

Question #2... no, keep trying though. :)
3.) 12:45PM - To Kill A Mocking Bird

12:45PM - To Kill a Mockingbird
You will have to highlight it to read it, this way if you still want to try to figure it out your self you may.
Timeless Classic
---------------------------------------------------------
First the answer to your question:
No one was alive
OK, next question, did the ranger find any animals in the cabin?
disneyrocks 09-28-2005, 05:31 AM 4. What comes up must come down?
2. Happy Birthday?
CaliDreamin 09-28-2005, 05:54 AM OK, next question, did the ranger find any animals in the cabin?
No there were no animals.
Jediviper 09-28-2005, 06:06 AM 4. What comes up must come down?
2. Happy Birthday?
Correct! We now have the answers to all of the questions from this morning. :) So I guess I will have to through some more out there 'eh?
As is my tradition (can you have a tradition after only a couple of days?) I wil start with a few rebus'...
1.) 10001000
2.) Sigh_
3.) (Hint: This one is a movie quote)
a) Jersey
b) yesnreuG
c) Alderney
d) Sark
4.)
1. A
2. AN
3. ANTS
4. AND
5.) depressed 111111 satellite
6.) FAR CLOSE AWAY NEAR
Then a few questions...
1.) A palindrome is a word that reads the same when spelled backwards (eg rotavator).
How could the following word be considered a palindrome?
FOOTSTOOL
2.) Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, lived a man of few talents but, as greedy as anyone can be. He stole, he lied and he cheated only for the sake of money and his ever-increasing treasure. But, one day he was trying to rob a child of his money on the edge of a lake. Innocently, the child pushed him into the lake and ran to safety.
Seeing the greedy man drowning, two passing villagers tried to help him. The first one quickly said, "Take my hand and I'll try to drag you out! Don't worry, you will be safe!" The second one rushed to help as well and stated, "Here old man, over here! Everything will be fine if you give me your hand."
The old man hesitated for a second, and then took the hand of the first villager. Why?
3.) After watching and discussing the 5 o'clock news including a story about a jewel heist that happened yesterday in the area, Tommy and his mother leave for the mall. It's closing soon.
While in the mall, Tommy nags his mother to buy him a "soldier toy." Mom buys him a toy set on the condition that Tommy stays put while in the shoe store, and she opens the set, giving Tommy ONE of the toys. Tommy wastes no time having some fun with his new toy.
Meanwhile, across the mall, a man and woman are enjoying each other's conversation over pizza. They seem very happy and excited about something.
After only a moment of fun with his new toy, Tommy comes to know what their excitement is all about. He begins pulling frantically on his mom's shirt to get her attention and he excitedly tells her what the couple just did, although it seems they were just talking. Tommy, however, is VERY excited. He was not known for telling tales, so his mom (a police officer), calls her department directly. After speaking with them, the man and woman are shortly apprehended with 2.9 million dollars in stolen jewels!
Tommy just cracked the heist case from the 5 o'clock news!
Questions:
(1) Tommy has both a disability and ability. What are they?'
(2) What was the 'Soldier Toy' Tommy's mom let him play with?
Well that aught to do for now... have fun! :)
Taryn 09-28-2005, 06:24 AM 1.) A palindrome is a word that reads the same when spelled backwards (eg rotavator).
How could the following word be considered a palindrome?
FOOTSTOOL
Hmm...well, every time you would want to read it backwords, you would need to flip it upside down, and take the little stem thing from the F and slap it onto the L...or something like that, lol, I just look closer at the word and I'm not so sure of myself anymore :D
And OMG, I can't believe I didn't get the To Kill a Mockingbird One....I was right on with the second word, but I couldn't for the LIFE of me figure out the meaning of 12:45PM- ;) Well, I guess I won't be able to sleep again tonight, I'll be to busy berating myself for my stupidity :D
Edit: 2.) Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, lived a man of few talents but, as greedy as anyone can be. He stole, he lied and he cheated only for the sake of money and his ever-increasing treasure. But, one day he was trying to rob a child of his money on the edge of a lake. The second one rushed to help as well and stated, "Here old man, over here! Everything will be fine if you give me your hand."
The old man hesitated for a second, and then took the hand of the first villager. Why?
Well of COURSE he couldn't GIVE someone his hand, he is much to greedy....if you were a theif, wouldn't you rather TAKE a hand?! :D
(1) Tommy has both a disability and ability. What are they?'
His disability is that he is deaf, and his ability is that he can read lips...not sure what the "soldier toy" is, though!
Jediviper 09-28-2005, 02:59 PM No there were no animals.
OK, next question... Did the cabin have propane or natural gas service?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmm...well, every time you would want to read it backwords, you would need to flip it upside down, and take the little stem thing from the F and slap it onto the L...or something like that, lol, I just look closer at the word and I'm not so sure of myself anymore
Nope! Not even close on this one... you'll have to change your thinking altogether to get it. ;)
Well of COURSE he couldn't GIVE someone his hand, he is much to greedy....if you were a theif, wouldn't you rather TAKE a hand
Absolutely correct! :)
His disability is that he is deaf, and his ability is that he can read lips...not sure what the "soldier toy" is, though!
Correct... now can you figure out what the toy was?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
BrAiN TeAsEr!
This kid he fell over 92 feet how did he survive?
I guess I'll take a crack at this one...
... He fell in front of 46 people... 46 sets of feet, or 92 feet?
CaliDreamin 09-28-2005, 05:16 PM OK, next question... Did the cabin have propane or natural gas service?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The cabin did not use propane or natural gas hook up. But keep thinking about the cabin!
Taryn 09-28-2005, 05:39 PM 1.) A palindrome is a word that reads the same when spelled backwards (eg rotavator).
How could the following word be considered a palindrome?
FOOTSTOOL
Hmm...I just showed this to my brother (he's a boy scout, lol...) and he says that if you use morse code, then it is a palindrome....not sure if I should trust him though, just because he's a boy scout doesn't mean he isn't a little terror ;)
1.) 10001000
One in a million?
2.) Sigh_
No end in sight!
6.) FAR CLOSE AWAY NEAR
Um...The end is Near?
(2) What was the 'Soldier Toy' Tommy's mom let him play with?
Hmm, this one is depending on how far away Tommy is from the theives....is the toy a set of binoculors??
Lol, thats all I have so far...the rest will keep me thinking, though :D

Well... terror or not; your brother is correct. Footstool in Morse code reads:
..-. --- --- - ... - --- --- .-..
... obviously a palindrome. ;)
One in a million is correct! :)
No end in sight is also correct!
The end is near huh? This answer means that, at heart, you are a pessimist, lol. ;) An optimist would have had a slightly different answer, can you figure out what?
Finally, you are correct, the 'soldier toy' was a set of binoculars. :)
Taryn 09-28-2005, 11:06 PM Well what do you know, my brother actually said the right answer! Remind me to give him a hug....or not ;)
3.) (Hint: This one is a movie quote)
a) Jersey
b) yesnreuG
c) Alderney
d) Sark
Hmm...those are the British Isles, correct? I'm guessing the fact that the fact that Guernsey is spelled backwards is important, lol....hmmm....I'll need to think harder on this one...
4.)
1. A
2. AN
3. ANTS
4. AND
Not sure about this one, but is the answer 'And last but not least'? I figured that And is the last word, but it doesn't have the fewest amount of letters....

Your definitely on the right track... keep thinking! ;)
and yes, the correct answer is 'and last, but not least'. :)
So we just have that one last rebus to solve...
-----------------------------------------
The cabin did not use propane or natural gas hook up. But keep thinking about the cabin!
Hmmmm... OK, next question... Was the cabin burnt?
ooo lets see I am going to add a riddle.
1)Ok the cops go into a house and find that someone commited ******* in a closet. The only things that were left were a puddle of water and a rope. How did she commit *******?
2) At the end of a huge forest fire all that was left was a man in a scuba suit hanging from a tree and a puddle of water. How did the man get up in the tree?
CaliDreamin 09-29-2005, 01:38 AM Hmmmm... OK, next question... Was the cabin burnt?
Maybe there was but that is not what killed them.
Xucid 09-29-2005, 02:23 AM ooo lets see I am going to add a riddle.

Um...not sure about this one, is it Once in a blue moon?
Correct on both counts! You are really good at these. :)
I will post a bunch more tomorrow morning; however for right now, chew on this one...
How many letters are in the answer to this question?
-------------------------------------
Maybe there was but that is not what killed them.
OK, so far all I know is that we have a possibly burnt cabin somewhere in the woods, and a 'ranger' found it with four deceased humans inside...
...my next question is...
Did the people die of natural causes?

How many letters are in the answer to this question?
'The answer to this question'? 23, if I counted right ;)
Edit: Well, while I await anxiously for Jedi's next round of riddles, I'll post my all time favorite one :D Now, if you've already done it, NO POSTING, because what is the fun in that?!
1. How do you put an elephant in a fridge?
2. How do you put a Zebra in a fridge?
3. The Lion King is getting married, and all of the animals come to see, except one. Which animal didn't show, and why?
4. A man needs to cross a river that is inhabited by man-eating alligators. He has no boat, and there is no bridge in sight. How does he cross?
You can answer the questions one at a time if you like, it might make it easier to solve....not that I'm hinting or anything ;)
Edit once more: AHH! I was just perusing a website of rebus's in order of difficulty...and do you know what the third from the top was, out of hundreds!? 12:34PM-Moby [rhymes with Stick, starts with D, LOL]! I no longer feel stupid :D
Jediviper 09-29-2005, 03:46 PM 'The answer to this question'? 23, if I counted right
Very clever, however this is not the answer we are looking for... there is a true answer to this question... ;)

LOL, that was the original format of the rebus, I had to change it due to the filter on the forum.
OK, now for some new ones!
As usual, we'll start with some rebus'
1.) What expression is represented here?
A pianist plays a short crisp d
then a loud e
followed by a gentle a
Finishing with a drawn out d
2.)

4.) How many sides does a circle have?
5.) In which six-letter country can the following capitals be found?
Athens, Delhi, London, Nassau, Oslo, and Peking.
...and now for something completely different...
Logic Grids! You can use the grid provided to help figure out the question. These are a couple of easy ones... we'll see how everyone does and I might post harder ones later. ;)
1.) After I moved into my new apartment, four friends stopped by to see the place. Knowing my love of plants each brought me a different type as a housewarming gift. The new plants now occupy different spots in the apartment. Can you determine who gave me which plant and where it now resides?
Friends: Natasha, David, Carmen, Chris
Plants: Cactus, Pothos, Spider plant, Zebra plant
Locations: Bathroom, Coffee table, Kitchen, Stereo
1. My brother David brought me the zebra plant, which I didn't hang in the bathroom.
2. A woman brought the plant that I placed next to the kitchen window.
3. Natasha (who didn't bring the cactus) didn't bring the plant that now hangs in the bathroom.
4. Chris brought the plant that is now on the coffee table.

I loathe math, and thought I would never find a use for learning it...but at last, I have! The Value of pie to 5 signifigant digits!
1.) Place a quarter and a dime in the middle of a table. Can you take the dime and place it under the quarter without touching or moving the quarter at all? How?
Of course you can, as long as the tablecloth doesn't get in the way of you holding it under the table ;)
2.) The score of a baseball game is four to three, in favor of the home team. It is bottom of the eighth inning and yet not one man has reached second base. How can this be?
Well, men can't play Little League, right?
3.) Can a man living in Texas be buried in Tennessee?
Ew, who would want to bury a living man?!
4.) How many sides does a circle have?
Two, the inside and the outside
5.) In which six-letter country can the following capitals be found?
Athens, Delhi, London, Nassau, Oslo, and Peking.
Poland! Haha, that one took me a while, I was sitting there going 'What the heck is Opland?!" Haha, I tend to have blonde moments every so ofter :D
FAR CLOSE AWAY NEAR
Hmm....would the optimist one be 'Near at last'? And since I figured it out, can I say I'm an optimist, despite my other answer?!
The rest of these should keep me busy for a while...what a great way to spend a day sick at home :D

Correct, though comparing the two is like comparing rotten eggs, and raw sewage, how can you really say that one is better? ;)
Correct! Darn I thought that would would take longer :(, lol j/k.

1)There was a man who walked into a Pub.HE went up to the bertender and asked for a drink. The Bartender Pulled a gun on him. The man said Thankyou and left the pub.
Why did he say thankyou?
I DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT ONE. MY TEACHER GAVE IT TO US FOR OVER FALL BREAK. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF YOU PPL CAN FIGURE IT OUT.

WHAT?! How can you SAY THAT? I mean, sure, Backstreet Boys, they were awful...but NSYNC?!!? Lol, I should probably mention that my obsession with that wonderful band occured a little less than 10 years ago, in Elementary school, and their concert happened to be my first...so of course they will always have a place in my heart ;)

Yes! :), (and yes, lol ;))
-----------------------------------------
Well that is all of them, so I guess I should post some more...
As per my long standing protocol ;), I shall begin with some rebus'.
1.) Cal------------------Cu
2.) Who's car might this plate be on?
M+M & LR
3.) wander + eo also precious gem + e + however
Then some questions.
1.) A truck driver went down a one-way street the wrong way in front of a police department without getting a ticket. How did he do this?
2.) Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith have 3 sons. Each son has a sister. How many members are in the family?
3.) A man asks his sons to do a chore. When they finish he pays one son 15 cents and the other son 10 cents. What time is it?
4.) Doc Jim and the police were investigating a drug smuggler who was staying at a local hotel. Unfortunately, when they arrived, the suspect, Smugglin' Sam, had already left. Luckily for them, he had left a list of the places where he was staying.
"According to his list," began the Captain, "he will be in Paris for two weeks, then Naples, then Athens, London, Palestine, and finally Moscow. He sure knows how to disguise himself. Well, tonight I'll have my men fly out to France to get him. We'll search every hotel there, but we'll find him."
"Unfortunately," said Doc, "Your men will be flying in the wrong direction to catch ol' Sam."
Where was Sam hiding?
5.) "I don't understand, Doc," complained Benny Jackson, a man who dedicates his life to trying to impress women, but has yet to succeed.
"What happened this time?" Doc Jim asked as he sat down beside the troubled youth.
"You know Samantha Wilcox? Her father owns several prize horses and has won countless racing medals with them, so Samantha won't look at a guy twice unless he's got a heart bigger for animals then himself. I thought I had my story down right. Will you tell me where I went wrong?"
"Sure, what'd you tell her?"
"A few years back I decided I'd take my mule, Miss Molly, out with me to go gold mining. Several months went by and I found nothing, but I kept looking. One day, I struck the mother load. It was cold, miserable weather, and Miss Molly wasn't feeling too good. So, instead of gettin' all that gold I found, I stayed with her for weeks. Poor girl was pregnant, and after a few months of waiting and nursing, she gave birth to a healthy baby. I didn't get the gold; I just brought the two home."
"Well, Ben, You're just lucky she didn't throw you out a window with a story like that!"
What was Benny's mistake?
6.) There once was a man named Mr. Braun. Not much was known about him, except for these things: he was married to a piano teacher, he was born and lived and married in Germany, and he had died a week earlier. Now, since he was dead and had no other living relatives, his estate would go to his wife (he left no will). The problem is, two women came forward, claiming to be the real Mrs. Braun.
Now, you're a detective, trying to figure out who is the real Mrs. Braun by having a piano competition. Mrs. Braun was an exceptional pianist, who could play many complex pieces. When you met them, they were sitting in a room with a couch and a piano. You extended your hand to greet them. One of them, a blonde, wore one ring (her wedding ring), which dug painfully into your hand when she shook it. The other (brunette) had one wedding ring also, but since it was on the other hand, you figured it was safe to shake..
Anyway, you put on the show with a lawyer as your witness. The blonde sat down and played Beethoven's Fifth with no trouble whatsoever, as did the brunette. They were both equal, but you manage to tell who the REAL Mrs. Braun was.
Who was it and how did you know?
7.) XLIV times X = CDXL
This statement is true in Roman numerals (44 x 10 = 440), but can you replace the letters with numbers such that it's still true?
Only one letter can stand for one number.
There are 2 answers.
8.) Lew W. Reese, Jr. was seated comfortably in one of the boardrooms of ACRON, Inc. One final test and he would then be hired as one of the company's top executives with a seven figure monthly salary and all the perks. Exactly for what top level office, he was not told by the executive search committee. Our Chairman feels strongly about your name, they told him.
After a few minutes, the charming assistant of the Chairman entered the room and gave him a piece of paper marked 44444.
He almost fell from his chair when he read it because he was clueless as to the officers of the company.
The paper read:
A.EXECUTIVE OFFICES
1. PRESIDENT: Mountains of Work. Rush Work. More Work or Bust.
2. CFO: Number Crunches. Value Operations.
3. CORPSEC: monthly meetings every 30 days.
4. VP-PLANNING: Environment and Competition Analysis
5. VP-MARKETING: Market Expansion in all Directions.
B. NAMES OF EXECUTIVES (not in order)
1. Steve A. Norfolk, Jr.
2. Milton David A. Swanson
3. Norman S. E. Waldorf
4. Wilma S. Ocier-Tellaney
Questions:
a. Who occupies which position?
b. Why are you being considered for the vacant office aside from your qualifications?
What should be Lew's answers?
9.) Which element in Group B can be added to Group A? Why?
Group A: Iridium, Vanadium, Xenon, Lanthanum, Carbon, Dysprosium
Group B: Radon, Barium, Uranium, Platinum, Manganese, Phosphorus
...and finally a couple more logic grids... a little harder this time. ;)
1.) Jacob, Dustin, Brittany, Michelle and Scott were eating at a restaurant. They each liked one of the following: apples, carrots, Starburst, sandwiches, or Skittles.
Their ages, in no specific order, are: 38, 14, 18, 43, 16.
Their food was under cooked, and they got bad food poisoning. Therefore, no one could remember who was who, but what they could remember was this:
1. The one who is 14 likes Skittles.
2. The one who is 18 has a name that doesn't start with the letter S or B.
3. Michelle is not 14 or 43.
4. Dustin likes Starburst.
5. Brittany is older than Jacob.
6. Scott is older than Dustin and Michelle.
7. Jacob is younger than Dustin.

2.) The parents of 5 boys went out for the night to celebrate their anniversary, and left their kids with a new babysitter. Unfortunately for the babysitter, the boys were feeling particularly restless that night, and decided to pull out their instruments and start playing. However, they all played a different tune and were making horrible noise instead of sweet music. The babysitter asked them to stop and they made a deal with her. If she can figure out the name of each boy, the instrument they are playing, and the color of their shirt, they will sit down and watch television. Can you help the babysitter figure it out before she pulls her hair out?
Boys Names: Roger, Ogden, Perry, Brent, Willie
Shirt Colors: white, green, purple, red, blue
Instrument: flute, drums, violin, guitar, bass
Clues:
1) The five boys are: Willie, the one playing the drums, the one wearing a blue shirt and playing the flute, the person wearing white, and Roger.
2) Ogden and Brent are wearing primary colors.
3) Perry has to be careful not to get his bow rosin on his white shirt.
4) At one point, Brent gets sick of hearing the boy in purple playing the bass, and throws one of his drumsticks at the boy.
5) Although purple wasn't Roger's first choice, it was the only shirt that smelled clean that morning.

Taryn 09-30-2005, 04:01 AM 3.) A man asks his sons to do a chore. When they finish he pays one son 15 cents and the other son 10 cents. What time is it?
Quarter to Two
4.) Doc Jim and the police were investigating a drug smuggler who was staying at a local hotel.
Epcot? Haha, jk...Well, I have a partial answer, but I can't get my brain to be SPECIFIC, so I guess I won't really give a real guess for this one :D

I was an exchange student to Germany last year, and the fact that my host mother wore her ring on the right hand was always a curiosity to me...You shake hands with your left hand, and since the blonde's ring dug into your hand, she is obviously NOT the real Mrs. Braun. Das brunnette ist Frau Braun! (hehe, sadly this is as good as my German gets ;))
Jediviper 09-30-2005, 04:22 AM Was it a fire truck?
Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith have 3 sons. Each son has a sister. How many members are in the family?
6.
No, it's not because it's a fire truck. You are actually way off track here... you might want to take a step back and look at this one again. ;)
Yes; Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, their 3 sons, and 1 daughter total 6 family members. :)

Correct on all three! You are way to good at these. ;)
On a side note; that must have been really cool studying in Germany! :)

And yeah, Germany was pretty cool...except for the whole talking thing, of which I was terrible at :D But whatever, the food and scenery all but made up for it!

is it a Mail Truck? Either that or it's Topsy Turvy Day....
Oh, and for the Drug Dealer One...I knew that somewhere in the US, there is a Paris...I was trying to think REALLY hard to think of which state it was, but I couldn't remember...then, as soon as I stopped thinking about it, Texas popped into my head! So, I plugged Paris, Texas into google, and lo-and-behold, I was right :D Also, the other cities are all in Texas...yeehaw

He was walking :) he wasn't driving the truck
Taryn 09-30-2005, 04:34 AM The truck driver was walking down the street.

Xucid 09-30-2005, 12:40 PM 7.) XLIV times X = CDXL
This statement is true in Roman numerals (44 x 10 = 440), but can you replace the letters with numbers such that it's still true?
Only one letter can stand for one number.
There are 2 answers.
i believe XL= 40 since L is 50 and X before L means 10 less than 50 and IV=4 because IV= 1 less than 5 as V is 5 times X whic = 10
as for the answer C=100 D=500 so C before D would mean 100 less than 500 which is of course 400 and like before XL = 10 less than 50 which is 40
therefore XLIV times X = CDXL would indeed = 44 times 10 which does equal 440.
hahaha, clever ;) However, I believe the correct answer is that he had hiccups, and the bartender scared them out of him.
My teacher said that. That was not the answer. We said that like 5 times lol

This is all true, however the question already states that the equasion is true in roman numerals. The goal of this question is to replace the letters with regular numbers in a way that makes the equasion still true. Remember that only one number can represent each letter, so if you say that X = 1 in the first part of the equasion, then X has to = 1 for the whole thing.
My teacher said that. That was not the answer. We said that like 5 times lol
Ill try the hiccup thing
I agree with Taryn and XschmoofyX, if the man walked into a bar with hiccups, he might ask for a drink. The bartender, seeing the man’s predicament, would have pulled the gun in order to scare him. If it worked, the man would surely say 'Thank you'. :)

The big clue in this question was the city name of Palestine. If he were actually traveling abroad, he would have written Israel, not Palestine. The detective knew this and that's how he was able to deduce that Sam was headed for Texas! :)

Finally, a few new logic grids. A couple of harder ones, and one really tough one... maybe I'm just mean, or maybe I want to see how long the really hard ones take... you all may never know, lol. ;)
1.) In the final battle against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Bill Weasley and Draco Malfoy must, in some order, cast one of 5 spells. Additionally, they must cast their spells in sync with their girlfriends to increase the potency of the only tool against Dark Magic: Love. The boys are dating either Cho Chang, Fleur Delacour, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley or Luna Lovegood. They each cast one of the following spells: Expelliarmus (disarms opponent), Reparo (repairs an object that is broken), Impendimenta (freezes opponent), Silencio (silences opponent), or Scourgify (cleansing spell).
1. Neville doesn't know how to cast a Reparo spell.
2. The 5 girls are the one dating Ron, the one who cast first, the one who used the Impendimenta spell, the one dating Harry, and the one who cast third.
3. Ron first began to realize just how wonderful his girlfriend, Luna (who is superstitious and therefore won't be the last to cast a spell), was when she was a substitute commentator at a Quidditch game.
4. Draco and his girlfriend cast fourth.
5. Bill has always been fond of his girlfriend's ability to cast the Scourgify spell, and so chose to cast that spell.
6. The five boys are Draco, the one dating Cho, the one who cast second, the one using the Scourgify spell, and the one who cast fifth.
7. None of boys cast a spell with the same first initial as their name.
8. Hermione is known for her skill in casting an Impendimenta spell, so her date picked that spell to cast.
9. Ron thought it would be "bloody brilliant" if he could make someone else keep quiet, so he cast the Silencio spell.
10. Fleur refused to allow her boyfriend and herself to cast their spell in any place but third, her lucky number.

2.) Sarah, Kelley, Jennifer, Erin, and Jan are all going out to party on Friday night. Each girl was picked up by the taxi service at a different house wearing different colored outfits (red dress, pink skirt, silver halter, black leather pants, and a white dress). Each girl met a man (Tyler, Christopher, Jacob, Tom, & Scott) while out at the clubs. Figure out which girl was picked up when, what they were wearing and who their dates were.
Girls: Sarah, Kelley, Jennifer, Erin, & Jan
Dates: Tyler, Christopher, Jacob, Tom, & Scott
Outfit colors: Red, Pink, Black, Silver, & White
1.None of the men dated a girl with the same first letter in their name or their clothing color as the first letter in his name.
2.Scott dates the girl who wears red and wasn't picked up last.
3.Christopher is best friends with Sarah and Erin but doesn't date them.
4.Jacob is Kelley's brother who dates the girl wearing black leather.
5.The first girl to be picked up wasn't wearing pink or red but her date was Tom.
6.It wasn't after Labor Day so Jan wasn't breaking any fashion rules by wearing white.
7.Tyler's date was picked up last and hates to wear the color white.
8.Kelley was picked up before Sarah but not before Erin.
9.Jan ordered the taxi, so it picked her up first.
10.The fifth girl to be picked up was wearing silver.
11.Erin, looking fiery hot, was the second girl to be picked up.
12.Jacob and Tyler are twin brothers; one likes girls in black while the other prefers girls in silver.

3.) Five competitors (two women named Alexa and Breanna, and three men named Larry, Arnold and Michael) recently decided they would race each other for a large prize. Before the race would start, each person decided to do a different aerobics class to try and become more fit and healthy. Each had already raced for a number of months in competitions (3, 6, 9, 12, 15). After two months of aerobics each person noticed a different benefit from their exercise. From the clues below, can you match the full name of each competitor with the number of months they've raced before, the benefit each has experienced from aerobics, and the brand of sneakers each wears?

Nope, good try though. :) This one is a tough as a 7 10 split. ;)
JamminJoey 10-01-2005, 08:52 PM I don't know if this has been posted or not, but I'll write it anyway.
One day, 3 wise men were in an arguement over who was the wisest. So they decided to take their problem up to the grand master of logic problems.
The grand master told them whoever answered the logic problem first wins. So the grand master showed them 5 hats; 3 black and 2 white.
Then the grand master said "I will turn off the light and put a hat on a each of your heads and I hide the other hats. When I turn on the light you will have equal chances to win. Each of you will see the hats of the two others, however not his own. The first one saying the color of his hat will win." Then before he could turn off the light, one of the masters guessed what the color of his hat will be.
What hat should it have been and how did he know?
(just to let you all know this is the second part of a 3 part brain teaser, but i didn't want to do it all because it would be too long, and i thought this was the easiest to understand)

All correct except for Question #3, you came up empty for the first time ever. :( I had to read it a few times before it sank in that you actually got one wrong!
P.S. You do know that I'm just teasing you right? ;) You are way better at these than I am that's for sure! :)

Man, you scared me for a second! I was about to go and frantically reread the problem, then I saw your ps ;) And it's not that I'm amazing at these things or anything, its just that when I read them, I can't get them out of my head, and I can't think of ANYTHING else until I figure them out :D Probably not the best thing when I read them right before school (Or during school, haha), but what can I say, I'm addicted :D
I figured out a few more of those Rebus', and a Question :D... I was going to take a stab at a riddle or two, but they are just confusing now as they were earlier, lol :)
Rebus 8.) The hanging gardens of Babylon
Rebus 10) No two ways around it
Rebus 19) Well, at FIRST I thought they were C and T, but you said that is wasn't what one would think..after a while, I realized it was R and E ;) (Sorry, I'm in a weird mood, lol)
Question 6) The two $100 bills were bills for $100 that he needed to pay
Hmm, I just finished the Harry Potter logic grid, and my answers came out a TINY, practically microscopic bit different than Appleson's (I say Neville goes first, Harry 5th while he says the opposite)...Apple is probably right (Monstrously huge logic grids aren't exactly my forte, lol ;)) but I figure I'll post mine anyways just in case I got it right :D

question 5: i think she was playing poker because isn't it when you fold your cards, you lose?
Your logic grid question is off a little... just the order it think. Taryn did get the correct answer below.
Your answer for question #5 however, is right on! :)
Man, you scared me for a second! I was about to go and frantically reread the problem, then I saw your ps And it's not that I'm amazing at these things or anything, its just that when I read them, I can't get them out of my head, and I can't think of ANYTHING else until I figure them out Probably not the best thing when I read them right before school (Or during school, haha), but what can I say, I'm addicted
I meant what I said about you being really good at these... however I think you misunderstood my P.S. Your answer to question #3 was incorrect. Since there are only two possible answers I guess saying that one is incorrect gives away the fact that the other is correct, so I will explain.
If you read the question very carefully, you will see that it never actually says that the 30 degree bucket has anything in it (now look at my post from before and see if can see the hints ;)). This bucket is actually empty, therefore in the 45 degree (water filled) bucket the ball will sink just a bit slower.
Rebus 8.) The hanging gardens of Babylon
Rebus 10) No two ways around it
Rebus 19) Well, at FIRST I thought they were C and T, but you said that is wasn't what one would think..after a while, I realized it was R and E (Sorry, I'm in a weird mood, lol)

Correct on all... except, you should have gone with your first thought on rebus #19... C and T are the missing letters, most people would think the puzzle was supposed to spell water melon. You just jumped to the right answer first. ;)
Xucid 10-02-2005, 12:16 PM if it is indeed c and t what are the words?
Jediviper 10-02-2005, 04:47 PM if it is indeed c and t what are the words?
Look very carefully at the question itself...
What are the elusive characters? Missing two letters or numbers?
W A T E ?
M ? L O N
Do you see it now? ;)

oh, now i see what you mean by that puzzle.
i also double checked my logic grid and it turns out that when i typed my answer here, i accidently switched 2 of my places lol. i'm just glad i copied down logic #2 right.

Cool, I thought it was weird that everything else would be right but the order. If you had made an error while solving it, more than the order should have been wrong. :)
LordIllidan 10-02-2005, 05:07 PM Here are some good ones

2. How do you put an elephant in?

4. You are trying to cross a river inhabited by crocodiles. How do you get across?

you may NOT cross out the = sign
Appleson 10-02-2005, 06:41 PM 8.) While walking down a country road near his home, Clem Kadiddlehopper saw a Murder.

Why not?
i know i'm going to be totally wrong on this, but i thought i might give it a shot. the word "murder" is a slang term in sports, which means to defeat a person or team completely. maybe what he saw was a few people playing a game and one team defeating the other.
2.) Tom and Ben were professional golfers and keen rivals. One day during a game, they had each scored 30 when Ben hit a bad shot. Tom immediately added 10 to his own score. Tom then hit a good shot and he had won the game. Why?
i'm still trying to figure this out, but is it possible that they weren't even playing golf because it didn't mention what game they were playing

Oh my. It's the birds! The birds...run before all those crows attack you and the school children! I play off of the murder (meaning a group of crows) term all the time. ;)
Jediviper 10-03-2005, 03:46 PM 4. Walk over the crocodiles? lol
You don't have to worry about the crocodiles... there still at the meeting. ;)

Close but no cigar. It looks like this question is causing a lot of racket in everyone's head... ;)

Correct! :) A 'murder of crows' is a group of crows, the character in the question simply saw a group of birds (It's also the title of a really great movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr.; not one for the kiddies though...).
I'm glad someone got this, I was starting to worry that everyone would think I had been poking fun at Appleson earlier, when |
