View Full Version : The MrGenie Pin!

I was messing around tonight in Edtv's room testing out the magic spells with some other people. All of a sudden, I saw Edtv use the pirate pin, but in the middle of the animation he changed back to his normal avatar, but still with the sparkles! I sent him a quick IM and asked him if he had any idea how he pulled it off, but he said it was an accident. So, needless to say, I had my new quest for the evening: figure out how to reproduce the pirate pin bug!

I'm happy to report that I've figured it out, as you can tell from my new signature. :)

While I'm tempted to keep this under my hat and have some more fun with it first, chances are they might fix this bug soon and I want you to all have a chance to try it out and get screenshots while you still can. Personally, I hope they NEVER fix this because it's way cooler than the pirate pin, in my opinion, and I don't see any harm in it.

Okay, here's what you do:

1) Open up the clothing window (not necessary, but reduces time to complete the trick).

2) Use the pirate magic pin.

3) Change any article of clothing, and select "OK" (to be sneaky, I change my shoes from gray to black so people don't know how I do the trick...however, now that I'm posting instructions, this isn't really necessary I guess).

That's it! Not too tricky at all. :) Have fun!

Ah! That is so cool, can't wait to try it. :D Hopefully, scammers won't catch wind of this, because they'll totally tell Newbies with mickey ears that they have a special magic Tinkerbell pin that creates pixie dust around you, or something like that, and ask them to trade. :p

I think we should all submit 'bug reports' asking that they KEEP this glitch! If they don't hear anything positive about it, I'm sure they'll 'fix' it :(

What makes it go away? Changing clothes again? And does it persist after logout and login? If so, then perhaps even if they fix it, anyone who was sparkling before can still sparkle (like Baby and Squeakytoy).

Maybe we can tell them it's our very own VMK insider's pixie dust.

MrGenie
06-28-2005, 10:05 AM
What makes it go away? Changing clothes again? And does it persist after logout and login?Once you trigger the effect, it lasts for the duration of your pirate magic pin (unlike the Buried in Treasure pin, you can combine up to five pirate magic pins for an extra long effect). However, the next time you use the pirate magic pin, you are back to the pirate again unless you perform the trick again. I don't think this is related to logging in/out of VMK.

Oh! I thought it was a permanent effect that you walked around with all the time.

On the one hand, too bad it's a temporary effect. On the other hand, it no longer seems like a glitch that *has* to be fixed. Yay!

Naming a magic pin after yourself eh?
Very sad.Well naturally, I named this magic pin after myself because it's me behind all the sparkles (or fireflies, if you will), but that's the beauty of the bug...you get to name your own pin after yourself (or anything you want)! PLEASE don't name your pin the "MrGenie pin"...that's just creepy. :D

Can you tell me how you made an animation with one picture? Is there a program to take like 20 pictures over a period of time?

Xiris

All i know about is print screen!

MrGenie

Can you tell me how you made an animation with one picture? Is there a program to take like 20 pictures over a period of time?Well, it was a bit of trial and error. It's pretty complicated, and I can't really walk you through the whole process (well, I could, but it would take me the next three hours to document :p). Instead, here's a general overview of what I did so maybe you can figure it out from here.

I could tell the pirate magic animation looped, but I wasn't sure how many frames there were before it started over. So, I spent about 10 minutes taking random screenshots and pasting them all into Photoshop. Once I had about 30 (yes, 30!), I looked at them one by one in an attempt to find a unique instance of each frame. After deleting all of the duplicates, I ended up with six unique animation frames that I copied and pasted as separate layers into the same Photoshop project, and I also cropped at this point. Fortunately, there is enough of a pattern in the animation that I was able to trace the path of one of the sparkles and arrange the frames in order. The final step was to save the whole project as an animated gif. I used ImageReady for this, but there are a lot of other programs that can do this (some of them are freeware/shareware...check on www.tucows.com).

Good luck! Animation is fun. :) I don't do nearly enough of it, but I always enjoy it when I do.

I used it for the first time today as well! However, I accidently changed my tank top to a weird, deformed purple shirt, so maybe it wasn't *entirely* succesfull...

Well, someone was kind enough to trade a Pirate Magic pin to me today, so I finally got to try this trick. What fun! I'll have to practice the timing, though; I can't seem to eliminate the short flash of Pirate costume before it changes. Thanks, Mr. Genie, for giving us this extra bit of sparkle! :pirate:

Hi, I'm new here. I tried this today and it worked fine, except I couldn't save a picture of me with the sparkles. I did a screen capture, then croped it in PSP7, and saved it as a .gif. I see the "still" sparkles in the pic, but no active sparkles like in the above pic. What am I doing wrong?

:(Yep, that's how it works...it lasts as long as your pirate magic pin lasts. Some of us were able to make five-star pirate magic pins while the pirate magic pin was still tradeable. Unfortunately, you can't trade it anymore so there isn't any way to get multiple pirate magic pins.

Hate to burst your bubble but I saw someone do that months ago. They showed me how to do it too. She called it pixie dust magic. It is way to cool. Angel Fancy :xmas35: :xmas30:

Hasn't anyone ever changed clothes while using the cursed storm pin? This sounds like the same idea. hmm.. wonder if the others are the same.

I was doing the "MrGenie Magic" yesterday and it only lasted for like 2 seconds! It does not last as long as it used to (the duration of your pirate magic). I think they have fixed that bug. :-(

I noticed this yesterday as well - not only have they fixed the bug, but when you try to achieve the pixie dust effect - the Pirate Costume goes away as well - and you still have to wait the full recharge time for the magic

I am a bit bummed - I really liked that effect!!!

Once you trigger the effect, it lasts for the duration of your pirate magic pin (unlike the Buried in Treasure pin, you can combine up to five pirate magic pins for an extra long effect). However, the next time you use the pirate magic pin, you are back to the pirate again unless you perform the trick again. I don't think this is related to logging in/out of VMK.

hey u know that pin thing that u told ppl to try?? thats not real right?? cuz i tried it and nothing happened so i was jw
