There are quite a few ways. One of them would to use a designer that supports PDF files, another, if you are scanning them in, save it as a .pdf. The best way would be to get Acrobat 8 Elements and/or Professional. Yes, these both cost.

The way that you had said above will not work. .txt files don't have the proper encoding to be PDF's.

If you just plan on making PDF of text I would suggest downloading OpenOffice. OpenOffice is a free, open source word processing program similar to Microsoft Office Word. You can create whatever you wish or import just about any text file and when you are done just click File-->Export As PDF. It is a big download (100+ megabytes), so if you have a slow connection it might take a long time. Just Google "OpenOffice" and it should take you to their web page. Make sure you get your parent's permission before downloading.
