OMG!!! I saw the musical "Wicked" Last night. I was just sitting there with my jaw open the whole time. It was the most amazing musical that I have EVER been to. Have any of you seen it? If it is coming to your town I suggest getting tickets now, it is well worth the money, trust me. I cannot rave enough about this. Sorry for being such a random post but WOW!

Yes, I've seen it. It was quite good and I enjoyed it a lot, too.

I wish the songs were a lot better, but most stage musicals have "nothing" scores these days.

But I thought the dialogue and staging were a lot of fun.

I've seen it... uh... a couple of times on Broadway at this point, and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. (Little known info - there is a lottery for $25 front row tickets every day a few hours before showtime. If you plan to be in the city, and feel lucky, this can be a great way to see the show. See the website for details.)

I have to disagree with you on this point. While some of the songs were kinda so-so (most of the male songs come to mind), the vast majority of them were wonderfully written and serve both as an integral part of the storytelling and stand well on their own. Songs like "Defying Gravity" are certainly taxing on the actress, but immensely powerfull when done well. Others such as "No One Mourns the Wicked" are as memorable as "Ding Dong, the Which is Dead" and still entirely singable (at least in the shower).

Wicked is probably one of the top 5 musicals I've ever seen, and that is in large part because of its music.

Oh, a Wicked thread. ;) It was the "cool musical everyone had to listen to" when it came out a couple years back. I have yet to see it though...it's not coming to town until next summer and I don't think I'll be getting to NYC anytime soon.

I have to agree with GreatGatsby about the score though...Stephen Schwartz is a powerhouse when it comes to lyrics, but his melodies are a bit iffy. "Defying Gravity," only passes when you have an actress with the ability of Idina Menzel. Same thing goes with all of the heroines' songs. In terms of storytelling, every single song works amazingly. If you need a character song for an audition, Wicked will be one of the shows that'll become part of the repertoire. For a "Broadway hits" pops symphony concert...none of them could pass. The melodies are catchy, but in my opinion are very thin. It didn't help that Schwartz orchestrated it with so much "space" between voices.

An awesome musical for music..."The Light in the Piazza." Simply beautiful...it's like Sondheim with more chromaticism. I need to buy an official copy of the album soon. ;)

I saw it at the Pantages Theater in LA. The overall presence of the music is great and catchy, but as you start listening, the songs are shallow, without much signifigance. The only part that shines is the book!

I'd have to say Les Miserables is my favorite musical, Ive seen it twice, it's just an amazing story. Plus, the book is marvelous; I can recite passages from memory.

The only part that shines [about Wicked] is the book!

Wow, do I have to disagree here. Unless you are talking about the book that was based on the show. I think the original book Wicked was an incredible and horrible let-down. There are only superficial similarities between the two (a couple of names, but not necessarily their characters, and one or two plot points), and the book ends up being a complicated, meandering, mess that never really explains things.

While I really like Les Miserables, both the book (or at least the English translation of it I read) and the musical , I think it is a clear example of why you should not pay authors by the word. It is incredibly inflated with entire chapters that don't actually advance the story or involve any of the major characters at all. My favorite example of this is the chapter about Thernadier in the war that was turned into two lines in the show - a well made edit.

There are only superficial similarities between the two (a couple of names, but not necessarily their characters, and one or two plot points), and the book ends up being a complicated, meandering, mess that never really explains things.Couldn't agree with you more on the book. I had heard great things about it, so I read it this summer. I kept waiting for the big payoff and it never came. Some interesting characters and clever writing at times, but I just thought all of the political/religious undertones were a complete mess and unresolved in the end. For the life of me, I still can't see the mass appeal unless it's for the few random acts of bawdiness or the superficial similarities, as you said. For what it's worth, Wynsome said Wicked falls somewhere between Mirror, Mirror (horrible) and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (excellent), both by Gregory Maguire as well.

Having said that, I still plan on seeing the musical of Wicked when it comes through Seattle next fall. I haven't seen a lot of musicals, but I really like them. I've seen Les Miserables three times and it's probably my all-time favorite as far as plot/lyrics/score go. I've also seen Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, The King and I, and some other things I'm too sleepy to remember (not counting all of the great Disney musicals on video). :) One of my all-time favorites is the Music Man; not sure why, but I've just always had a soft spot in my heart for that one (with the exception of the Matthew Broderick movie....yech).

TrueStarGazer...there are buttons at the top of every category page for a new topic. Try clicking them and see what happens! ;)

Anyways...I did find the book to be highly rewarding. Less so than Confessions... but still as thought provoking as some of the things I've had to read in English class in the past few years. (I'm thinking The House on Mango Street among others). If anything the descriptions Maguire employs are stupendous. I felt like I was taking every step, every breath, and every event just as hard as Elphaba did through the entire novel. I do admit that some of the political and religous overtones were lost along the course of the book...it ended up to be a very good "medium" level book. (And that's medium between something like Joyce's Ulysses and say a Michael Crichton book).

From what I've heard about the musical's "book," it's supposed to be the complete opposite of the (almost) pyschological analysis of the events leading up to and during Dorothy's arrival in Oz. It's stale, slow, way too superficial, and ultimately kind of a bore. Even Schwartz's song lyrics aren't all to fulfilling. From the people I've talked to who have seen the show...they're raving about the visual effects, the designs, and the performances. Not so much the words coming out of the cast's mouths.

That said, I'm waiting for A LONG time (:() until the tour finally comes to my hometown!

I think you're quoting Glinda's solo at the beginning of "Popular."

"Whenever I see someone...less fortunate than I. And let's face it, who isn't..less fortunate than I. My tender heart tends to start to bleed. And when someone needs a makeover, I simply have to take over. I know, I know. Exactly...what they need. And even in you case...though it's the toughest case, I've yet to face. Don't worry...I'm determined to succeed. Follow my lead, and yes indeed. You. Will. Be. Popular..."

Yes, after hearing musical theater people singing everywhere for months during my Freshman year, I still remember it. ;) Bless us with some more of the better one liners from the show! :D
