View Full Version : Thread Deleted??!!
trouble 06-27-2005, 06:53 PM last night, i posted to a thread about vmk members policing other members
about inappropriate behavior while online. the discussions rapidly developed
in response to my postings. come today, i find that the link to the thread doesn't
seem to exist anymore. i go to my profile and it won't link to the thread with the
'find other posts by' button.
when i click on the link i saved for the thread, i get this screen:
"trouble, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."
am i correct to assume the entire thread was deleted? or have i been locked out of it?
here's the link i have to the thread (or somewhere in the middle of it).
can someone simply explain what has happened here? i'd like to be clear.

thanks.
otto888 06-27-2005, 07:04 PM its in a hidden thread
FlyThenFall 06-27-2005, 07:04 PM It might have been moved around. All the threads have been shuffled around because of the Forum redo last night. Just check around, and remember the Search button is your friend! :)
Then again, that message usually means that it's been removed from the forums altogether, and I can see why. It may have contained controvertial remarks and provoked some people. But personally, I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest bit. Things like this happen all the time on forums.
trouble 06-27-2005, 07:07 PM is it 'hidden' from everyone then, or just me?
has anyone been able to locate it?
will it ever come back?
still a bit perplexed...
MrGenie 06-27-2005, 07:17 PM I can confirm the thread you linked to in your original post has been moved to the Moderator-Only section of the forum. I am not sure who moved it there, but after reading through some of the recent posts to that thread, I am not surprised. This thread had been problematic from the beginning due to its content matter. Trouble, your first post in the thread in question was #39, so please don't feel like the reason the thread disappeared was your fault. There were 60 posts by the time this thread was finally hidden.
If you feel strongly that this thread should be unhidden, please contact a moderator or an admin. Perhaps they might consider splitting out your portion of the thread if it was valuable, but this is often difficult to do.
Lastly, a general comment on why threads like this tend to disappear (just my opinion): a lot of people like to post examples of things that are "naughty" in VMK...not to say "hee hee! look at this!" but to say, "Isn't this bad???" These topics tend to generate a lot of interest from people who agree ("Yes, that's the worst thing I've ever seen!") or people who consider it a warning ("ooh, thanks for the tip...I don't want to get banned!"). Even though these are decent reasons to comment, to me it comes back to this basic guiding principle: If something is bad and you don't believe it should exist in VMK, then 9 times out of 10 it's probably not an appropriate topic for discussion on the forum either.

PixelProphet 06-27-2005, 08:28 PM best thing to do is remember.
if you think to your self, "Can i get in troule for it?" chances are that you will get in trouble.
GoldenHeart 06-27-2005, 08:30 PM for a second there when it said my user name i thoght i was really doing it to me! lol! but really that is weird.
trouble 06-27-2005, 08:34 PM pixel, i remember you posted in that thread.
are you able to find it now?
you know, i don't know how anyone can express an opinion
without ticking someone off. how are we supposed to get
ideas across or ask questions if we think are responses are
in danger of being deleted? you seem to be implying that I
am the individual at fault here when nobody really seems to
know the definitive answer
aren't you interested in how that thread was going to turn out?
MrGenie 06-27-2005, 08:48 PM pixel, i remember you posted in that thread.
are you able to find it now?Only forum Moderators / Admins can currently view the thread you are referring to. That is what I meant when I said it has been moved to the "Moderators Only" section of the forum.
you know, i don't know how anyone can express an opinion without ticking someone off. how are we supposed to get ideas across or ask questions if we think are responses are in danger of being deleted? There are numerous examples on this forum where the Moderators have allowed good-natured discussion to continue unchecked; in contrast, I would say that fewer than 1% of all threads/posts are edited or hidden. You're correct that it is often impossible to express an opinion without "ticking someone off"...consequently, the Mods aren't running around deleting all of the posts that people don't completely agree on. However, some topics are pretty borderline, and when the general discussion crosses the line to the point where it's not really salvageable by editing, that's when threads usually get hidden. Regarding the thread in question, I know you did post some well-thought out comments that would not have been objectionable in isolation. Unfortunately, someone determined that this entire thread was irrevocably off-track and inappropriate, and your posts (along with 57 other posts) were all hidden. When in doubt, it might be safer not to spend a lot of time posting in a thread if you believe that thread contains potentially objectionable content. As I said in my original post, if you feel strongly that the thread should be split and your posts retained, please contact a Mod or an Admin.
...you seem to be implying that I am the individual at fault here when nobody really seems to know the definitive answer...I'm not sure if you are addressing your entire post to PixelProphet, or just the first paragraph. If the rest of your post is directed to me or anyone else, please re-read my original post in this thread...I think you will see that clearly I am not blaming you at all for the reason this thread was removed.
...aren't you interested in how that thread was going to turn out?I saw how the thread turned out; it wasn't pretty, which is to say that it turned out exactly as I had feared from the very beginning. ;)
GBShorts 06-27-2005, 08:53 PM Mind if I ask...

trouble 06-27-2005, 08:54 PM ok, i got it. point taken.

What thread WAS this?? What was the title?
well, the thread is not accessible now.
even i forgot the title (i didn't start it),
but it was mostly about vmk members
reporting others for various infractions and i
ended up commenting that they were 'busybodies'
as i remember it.
it all went downhill from there...
here's the link, but it goes nowhere:

MrGenie 06-27-2005, 09:39 PM Mind if I ask...
What thread WAS this?? What was the title? The thread in question was the "Things have gone to far with Love in VMK", started by Treasure Hunter. Having said that, I am not attempting to single him out or anyone else for posting something inappropriate; I just want to make this process as transparent as I can since it's not at all a conspiracy or blatant censorship. In this case, I believe it was just a case of too many borderline posts...in isolation, not that big of a deal, but taken together, not a very family-friendly topic (although as I said, I'm not the one who removed this thread, so I'm just speculating).
