Fantasmic! is the night-time fireworks and visual hydrotechnic show at Disneyland in California and Disney-MGM Studios, Florida. It originated at Disneyland in 1992 when Disneyland Entertainment was asked to create a night-time spectacular involving water and fireworks to fill the space at the Rivers of America. Disneyland Entertainment employed the resources of Walt Disney Feature Animation and Walt Disney Imagineering as collaborators. In 1996, Walt Disney Entertainment in Florida, partnering with Imagineering and Feature Animation as well, worked to adapt the show for performing at the Disney-MGM Studios, featuring brand new animated and live action scenes.

At Disneyland, the Rivers of America had to be drained in order to install the extensive lighting, effects and sound equipment in addition to a new track for the S.S. Columbia and the Mark Twain to travel for the show. The walkways in New Orleans Square were also modified, but were already considered one of the benefits of building the show in that location.

When Team Disney Orlando commissioned a Fantasmic! of its own in 1996, a purpose-built 8,000 seat amphitheater was built at the Disney-MGM Studios[1], which was suffering from low attendance and was in drastic need of a replacement for Sorcery in the Sky, the night-time entertainment fireworks show that the park opened in 1992. The Rivers of America at the Magic Kingdom was not conducive to a replication of the layout at Disneyland.

I've seen both versions, and they're both great. I prefer the Disneyland version, especially with the reserved box seats and dessert buffet. Yummy!

lol they both ROCK. they're very different. like, at DLR they have a pinocchio puppet thing. and at WDW they have much more of the projector on the water.

but one thing i was kinda dissapointed to see at WDW, is that they didn't have the boat at the end. And they twirl stuff around. does anybody know if they just do that if the boats not working? or if they just changed it so there's no boat?

They do have a boat but it's way smaller than the Mark Twain at Disneyland. And instead of the Peter Pan segment they only have a Pocahontas thing which is disappointing.

I feel that the Disneyland version is better. The Rivers of America offer a better atmosphere and they have the Mark Twain and the Columbia. Disneyland's Fantasmic’s main problem is the over crowded walkways and the fight for seating. DisneyWorld's stadium seating is a big plus but the show seems to be a mix of Disney movie clips not a fluent show like Disneyland’s Fantasmic. DisneyWorld's version seems to lacks the magic that Disneyland has.

Here are some technical facts of the show. Some of the facts listed are out of date but most are current.

I saw the MGM version a few weeks ago. My favorite part was when the dragon lit the water on fire. I could feel the heat from it, even sitting near the back. The only problem was I couldn't tell what was going on half the time. The story could have used more polishing, but otherwise it was great.

This is really the biggest problem with the MGM version. In changing it from the DL version, they took out some of the more "fantasy" aspects of it that made it more clear this was Mickeys Dream.

They also seem to rely a lot more on the water screens, which really takes away from the quality of the story.

Finally, I think the story itself hasn't aged well. On one hand, it still has a terrific undertone - good vs evil in Mickey's dreams. On the other hand, Disney is now showing so many other versions of the same story (theming the whole promotion around "dreams" is a tip-off) that you have to wonder if you should care, even if it was the original show to use the storyline.

I saw the MGM one first, and thought it a horrible show. Yeah, it has some great parts and some really good music, but overall I was dissapointed. Saw the DL one and was awed... that is a significantly better production all around.

We missed Fantasmic at DL last October as we just didn't have enough time. Our friends were getting us VIP seats too.
I LOVE the show at MGM, I purely think that it's one of the best shows on earth.. I even once questioned my parents, asking if it had won any awards.
Looking forward to maybe seeing the one at DL, and then comparing it to the one at DW.
