ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA – The Virtual Magic Kingdom, better known as VMK, is one of Disney’s massive online games. This game incorporates the Magic Kingdom parks from Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland into a spectacle of virtual entertainment for online users. Disney announced today that the VMK will have a larger impact in new Magic Kingdom features. According to Disney officials, games played by people within VMK will soon be able to be played in real life at the attraction that suits the game. For instance, a large building is being erected behind The Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. This building will be made over to resemble The Haunted Mansion Game scenes inside the VMK. When all finished, this will be an actual game to be played by guests of the park. Veterans of VMK will recognize the poltergeist-like equipment used for this real life game. Officials from Disney state that this technology has been in design since VMK was, and is finally ready for use by guests.
That’s not all though: Regulars to the “kingdoms” will soon notice changes during the nighttime fireworks shows, Jungle Cruise attraction, and Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. “We’re going to give guests cameras that work much like the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters guns do, but react with the different animals along the cruise. We’ve started placing sensors along these animals, and the camera will react with the sensors, taking a picture worth virtual points for the online game” says John Smith of Disney Imagineering, “Guests in park will be able to compete against players online for the top scores of the day, much like our Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters attraction does right now. A similar change will happen with Pirates of the Caribbean soon, as well. We’re installing cannons on the ride boats that incorporate the same technology as “Buzz” as well as Jungle Cruise. These cannons will be used to fire at targets placed around the attraction. We’re trying to make our rides more interactive for our guests, and incorporating VMK is an amazing way to go about it.”
