S86Goddess 06-27-2005, 03:40 AM In anticipation of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, I am once again reading the previous 5 books. I also recently finished Disneyland Detective, and the Grant Morrison run of X-Men. I heart reading! :D Mr.Lunatix 06-27-2005, 03:41 AM I actually just opened my first page of Taming of the Shrew, Can't wait. thetitan13 06-27-2005, 03:41 AM I'm reading Midnight for Charlie Bone at the moment but I just started it. S86Goddess 06-27-2005, 03:43 AM I actually just opened my first page of Taming of the Shrew, Can't wait. I heart Shakespeare. Shrew is a great read! Enjoy! DoublethePop 06-27-2005, 03:44 AM Nothing, until the next Series of Unfortunant Events book comes out... or until I get it... Although I am reading about dragons. (Did you know that dragons have their own writing system and language?) S86Goddess 06-27-2005, 03:47 AM I'm going to the midnight Harry Potter party and will lock myself in my room and read. Midnight Magic Party here I come! And I'm dragging my husband. He is so thrilled...I have many many issues... figmentisback 06-27-2005, 03:49 AM Midnight party.. not for me.. I'm out of the area... far out of the area... at a real land.. I have yet to pick up Asimov's Foundation series in a while... (reads 5 pages.. falls asleep.. even though it is so good..) shiregirl 06-27-2005, 03:58 AM I am also re-reading Harry Potter books 1-5 in anticipation of July 16. I am so excited! :) :) :) :) (Who hopes Ron and Herminone get together? I do!) Next book on my list is Sylvie and Bruno by Lewis Carroll (a friend says it's his favorite). Great book. sonofshine 06-27-2005, 04:58 AM I am reading This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti It is a great book for anyone who, like myself, are big fans of spiritual warfare :) i am also waiting for HP:HBP to come out ^-^ Rogie 06-27-2005, 05:20 AM Just finished off Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. Nothing like true crime and architectural history to make summer less boring.... Hopefully going to start reading some Ian Fleming (although in translation, so we'll see how my language skills are...) and Elmore Leonard's latest before the 16th. Hopefully I won't be working the release night like I was last year (granted, I was still working in a bookstore, but far, far less fun) Taryn 06-27-2005, 05:26 AM I'm rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone for the 126th time (No joke! And I started counting about 6 months after the first time, so it should really be a few more :D ) I plan on re-reading the entire series two times in the next 19 days, in preperation for Half-Blood Prince!! (And, if anyone was wondering, I've read Chamber 67 times [my least favorite], Prisoner 79 times, Goblet 23 times [It's LONG!], and Order only 12 times [Its the longest, and has only been out a year] ) Wow, I'm such a nerd..... Wynsome 06-27-2005, 05:36 AM I'm finally getting around to reading The Wizard of Oz. I picked it out from the library to read to a child, but it's a good book for anyone. KrazyChik 06-27-2005, 05:39 AM and Order only 12 times [Its the longest, and has only been out a couple of years] ) Wow, I'm such a nerd..... HP and The Order of the Phoenix has only been out for a year...Like almost exactly it only came out last year... :) Taryn 06-27-2005, 05:43 AM HP and The Order of the Phoenix has only been out for a year...Like almost exactly it only came out last year... :) Oh, gosh, you're right! STUPID typo on my part! But you have to give me a break, I've gotten a collective 5 hours of sleep in the last 3 days! :o Edit: No, wait...it HAS been out two years! It came out when at the end of my freshman year, and now I'm going into my senior year! shiregirl 06-27-2005, 05:43 AM I'm finally getting around to reading The Wizard of Oz. I picked it out from the library to read to a child, but it's a good book for anyone. I love the Wizard of Oz! I've read every Oz book ever, including the ones that weren't written by L. Frank Baum. Someday, when I'm rich , I will own them all. I want really old editions (maybe even first, if I win the lottery!) I am a big fan of John R. Neill's Illustrations too. FlyThenFall 06-27-2005, 06:06 AM Then, I have to read Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince because it is required by my AP English Teacher... :D I want your AP English teacher... Anyways I just finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It's a coming of age story set around Afganistan and the Soviet/Taliban takeovers. Very powerful stuff... shiregirl 06-27-2005, 06:19 AM Anyways I just finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It's a coming of age story set around Afganistan and the Soviet/Taliban takeovers. Very powerful stuff... I have heard The Kite Runner is an excellent book and I've been wanting to read it. I shall take your comment as a recommendation. (I'm always looking for good books to add to my reading list, so recommendations are always appreciated.) AliceInVMK 06-27-2005, 08:56 AM I love the Wizard of Oz! I've read every Oz book ever, including the ones that weren't written by L. Frank Baum. Someday, when I'm rich , I will own them all. I want really old editions (maybe even first, if I win the lottery!) I am a big fan of John R. Neill's Illustrations too. I'm a huge Oz fan as well! I just finished reading The Tin Woodman Of Oz after picking it up at a book sale. And when I was little, John R. Neill was one of my heroes. I used to try and copy his style when drawing. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to reading. I managed to pass my AP English course with a B average without reading a single book the entire year, and we read a book about every month. Right now, though, I'm trying to read Pigs In Heaven because I loved Bean Trees so much. Miss MeowsALot 06-27-2005, 11:03 AM I am Reading Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix :) then I have to read the Westing Game for summer reading. PrivyToDoom 06-27-2005, 01:25 PM I just finished reading the novel Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. It was not his best work. I was entertained and it was a quick read, but I didn't feel it was the same quality as his first three novels. If anyone has read any Palahniuk and is interested in reading more, I'd recommend Survivor, Invisible Monsters, and Fight Club. Those three are by far his best work, and in that order too. Yesterday, or maybe the day before (my days are blurring together) I finished reading the graphic novel Goldfish by Brian Michael Bendis. I loved it. The story and the art were amazing, I’d love to see it turned into a film, since the flow of the novel has a very cinimatic feel. I’m waiting patiently to borrow my friends Powers series by Bendis, currently her boyfriend has them, so while I wait I need to read something else. I think I may read House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I’ve read it a few times before and every time it draws me in, it is truly a unique novel in story telling as well as layout. Edited due to typos Mollie 06-27-2005, 01:29 PM I'm working thru the Lemony Snicket series for the second time (I'm on Vile Village right now), taking notes this time. I have to recommend this series, even to adults, if you like a good mystery. The 'author' of the books is part of a deeper mystery in the series. I can hardly wait for HBP! Mollie ebbie 06-27-2005, 04:24 PM Just started Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking. Just finished Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich and a sort-of-novel of the Slayers anime. MrGenie 06-27-2005, 10:12 PM I have heard The Kite Runner is an excellent book and I've been wanting to read it. I shall take your comment as a recommendation.I'd also recommend The Kite Runner, although note that it is a bit of an adult book. An amazing effort for a first-time author...extremely well-written. A brilliant piece of modern historical fiction that makes you say when you're finished, "that can't be fiction!" Only negative thing I would say is that I think the author pushed the "parallelism" button a little too hard in trying to connect everything together and wrap up the story. Still, I'm nit-picking. :) I love the Wizard of Oz! I've read every Oz book ever, including the ones that weren't written by L. Frank Baum. Someday, when I'm rich , I will own them all. I want really old editions (maybe even first, if I win the lottery!) I am a big fan of John R. Neill's Illustrations too.Has anybody read Wicked yet? I'm thinking about picking that up this summer (if I can pry myself away from VMK for long enough to read anything! :p). Chip 06-27-2005, 10:21 PM I am reading Harry Potter and the order of the Pheonix for the 5th time waiting for the next book to come out! Joshua 06-27-2005, 10:44 PM Lemony Snicket's series really is quite confusing. He says every thing about it is true. Kinda hard to believe that. I started The Goblet of Fire then realized that I had to finish books quickly during the end of school to make the required amount. So I went to a shorter book, Hatching Magic by Ann Downer.I never finished that in time, so I came out with 1 less book then the required amout. Heck, all you got was a cheap pencil. Hatching Magic go boring, so I switched to a series called Guadians of Ga'Hoole. I finished the first book, The Capture on my vacation (which I got back from yesterday) and am now reading the second book, The Journey. After the 7 book-long series, I plan to finish Hatching Magic, and go back to Harry Potter books 4, 5, and 6. I recommend reading the "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" series. Here is the description on the back of the first book: "Soren is born in the Forest of Tyto, a traquil kingdom where the Barn Owls dwell. But evil lurks in the owl world, evil that threatens to shatter Tyto's peace and change the course of Soren's life forever. Soren is captured and taken to a dark and forbidding canyon. It's called an orphanage, but Soren believes it's something far worse. He and his friend Gylfie know that the only way out is up. To escape, they will need to do something they have never done before- fly. And so begins a magical jouney. Along the way, Soren and Glyfie meet Twilight and Digger. The four owls band together to seek the truth and protect the owl world from unimaginable danger." Monorailfreak 06-27-2005, 10:49 PM I'm currently reading The Third Chimpanzee by Jared Diamond. I also just finnished Villa Incognito which rocked. FlyThenFall 06-28-2005, 12:55 AM Has anybody read Wicked yet? I'm thinking about picking that up this summer (if I can pry myself away from VMK for long enough to read anything! :p). OMG MrGenie, you have to read Wicked!! Gregory Maguire is a genius in all his fractured fairy tale stories. It's just simply amazing; it gives you a whole new perspective on the Wizard of Oz. Kycha 06-28-2005, 01:05 AM Oh I can't wait for HP and the Half Blood Prince! I read the last one (all 870 pages) in one night. Yes. I'm grown. I read Harry Potter. I just finished reading the second Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book-waiting for 3 to be in paperback. I'm reading Midnight for Charlie Bone at the moment but I just started it. I love, love, love the Harry Potter series as well. And yes I am grown too. I am currently rereading the series in preparation for the release of the new book in July. However, I am only up to Prisoner of Azkaban. Becoming a VMK addict has kinda cut into my reading time. lol. I am also making my way through the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. :p :p cheetahlover 06-30-2005, 12:00 AM i am reading a book called East i just got it from the book store it is really good i recomend it to everybody :) RoyalHighness 06-30-2005, 02:17 AM All I really Need To know I Learned in Kindergarten...again bugman 06-30-2005, 02:20 AM The DA Vinci code for the second time MsBehave 06-30-2005, 02:34 AM All-American Girl by Meg Cabot. . . for the tenth time! Ah, that book rocks! -Ms.Behave Mr.Lunatix 06-30-2005, 02:34 AM I just Finished Stuck in Neutral about a kid with cerebral palsy, and thinks his dad is trying to kill him... and Inside Out, about a Kid with Schizophrenia and becomes a hostage during a robbery- and he takes his medicine so he doesn't think of suicidal thoughts and because of this robbery, he doesn't have his meds..... 2 very good books by 1 Author, Can't wait for him to write more. Jediviper 06-30-2005, 02:42 AM I have just finished "The Murder Artist" by John Case. If you’re into murder mysteries it is definitely a good one. Before that I had just read about six Michael Connelly books in a row (now there is a good cop drama/murder mystery author)! Next on my list are the five books of the Hitchhikers trilogy. I've wanted to read them for ages, but for some reason I always seem to overlook I am also reading the Harry Potter series aloud to my daughter, and am very much looking forward to the next one! MsBehave 06-30-2005, 02:45 AM oh. i am also reading *The Ring* (yes, it is the book in which the movie The Ring is based on. you know, with the well and video and stuff) BUT IT IS WAY HARD TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE SOME JAPANESE DUDE WROTE IT, SO YEAH. just saying, but it is still way cool -Ms.Behave trstno1 06-30-2005, 03:02 AM I'd also recommend The Kite Runner, although note that it is a bit of an adult book. :) Has anybody read Wicked yet? I'm thinking about picking that up this summer (if I can pry myself away from VMK for long enough to read anything! :p). Wicked is great! Well, at least the first 75%. The ending comes on a little sudden and is hard to grasp, but Elphie is an awesome character. I really want to see the musical. BTW, his other books aren't quite as good. trstno1 06-30-2005, 03:11 AM I'm just starting, "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell," by Susanna Clarke. It's well-researched historical fiction, but with magic! Who doesn't like that? Also, I'm reading, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," to my five year-old daughter. I hope the new movie is preschooler friendly. Chele 07-01-2005, 03:55 AM The DA Vinci code for the second time Bugman: Dan Brown is a phenomenal author. I hope you’ve read some of his other novels including Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress. Many items that he deals with really push the religious teachings that I (and many others) have been taught and put a unique and insightful twist on them. Rogie 07-01-2005, 04:08 AM Bugman: Dan Brown is a phenomenal author. I hope you’ve read some of his other novels including Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress. While I find Brown entertaining, I'd hardly label him phenomenal. Granted, he's better than most of the stuff that's out there, but he's not that great (shallow character development is my main issue). Many items that he deals with really push the religious teachings that I (and many others) have been taught and put a unique and insightful twist on them. Oddly enough, I know quite a few people who trash the books for this very reason. I'm not one of them, but can see how they might be a little miffed (although I think the fact that the book is FICTION weakens the argument). English student diatribes aside, if you enjoyed his work, you might also like "The Amber Room" by Steve Berry. Unlike the "Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" it deals with a less well-known topic (I doubt few Americans have ever heard about the Amber Room, which was stolen by the Germans in WWII only to "dissappear." Rather a fascinating historical subject, but I'm also a Russian major), which might make it a little more believable. Mollie 07-01-2005, 02:45 PM Also, I'm reading, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," to my five year-old daughter. I hope the new movie is preschooler friendly. trstno1, I have heard that the new movie version of Charlie is much darker compared to the original. You may want to preview it before letting your five year old watch it. I am hoping it is good, though... its hard to watch a remake of a favorite childhood movie, isn't it? Usaually I think 'what, thats not right!' :wave2: Mollie Bubbles 07-01-2005, 02:58 PM trstno1, I have heard that the new movie version of Charlie is much darker compared to the original. Usaually I think 'what, thats not right!' :wave2: Mollie The new version is truer to the book than the original. Willy Wonka was a mean man when you think about it. I'm going to miss the Oompa Loompa songs the most, and the song Wonka sings in the Choclate River room. I can't wait to see it. Bunnie 07-03-2005, 06:04 AM I'm reading "Shadow Fires" by Dean Koontz. It's definitely interesting. Of course, it's not really for bedtime reading. Makes my hair stand on end. Creepy.... scary..... nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo trstno1 07-03-2005, 01:08 PM trstno1, I have heard that the new movie version of Charlie is much darker compared to the original.
