View Full Version : Dining With An Imagineer
Stitchco 03-26-2007, 09:17 PM As you all should and probably do know, WDW has a lunch program where you can eat with Disney Imagineers. You can choose either to eat at Artist's Point Cafe or The Hollywood Brown Derby. I just ate last week, and I thought that some of you guys might like to know about it before they stop doing this program. Before I get started I must tell you this was a very interesting experience. So let me tell you all about some of the things that happened and give you suggestions if you ever do this program:
TIPS:
1). This is a 4 course meal. You get a beverage, two appetizers, a choice of a meal out of 3 choices to choose from, and desert.
2). Plan questions out ahead of time. After all, it helps to be prepared.
3). Make sure you don't have too much to eat before you eat with the imagineer.
My Experience:
I asked a lot of questions, but I won't tell you all of them, just some unless you want me to. I first asked if they are thinking about updating the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror. The Imagineer told us that they have an Imagineer that has a special profile for the ride, except he's "out-of-town", but when he gets back they might upgrade it. My next question was about Beastly Kingdom. As many of you know it was supposed to be where Camp Mickey-Minnie is now, but they apperently might be bringing it back. Also I asked about the boat ride that used to be at AK(Animal Kingdom), and she actually rode the boat ride. Their was suppose to be a fire-breating dragon and an-almost octupus attack, but of corse they did get rid of it. I also asked about the new ride coming to MGM, but she couldn't tell us much about it, because they don't want anyone to know to much about it yet, except for what they already released. I even found out an interesting fact about Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror, but I will not say what it is most likely.
After the meal is over they give you nice glass plate-like plates to take home signed by the imagineer. I might tell more soon!
Mods, if this has already been posted, please remove this.

Neoteny 03-26-2007, 09:46 PM Sounds like fun! I hadn't heard about this opportunity. I've eaten with characters before, but never with imagineers. I'll have to look into it on my next trip to Walt Disney World.
PrincessKala 03-26-2007, 10:30 PM Wow! That sounds like an Awesome Experience!
I hope I get to try this some day! :D
Thanks for the Great Info!
:hop: Carrie
DizCaptain 03-27-2007, 12:07 AM That is very cool. Actually Im going to be doing the same thing this coming week or so because im going to be down there. It sounds like fun and thanks.

Same, this is my chance to learn about WDW in a whole new way...as well as present some ideas to the Imagineer.
LordIllidan 03-31-2007, 07:25 AM Just more proof that, despite the fact us Californians had the first Disney park, you guys get all the cool stuff since hotels didn't decide to build themselves around you and eat all your space. Yay!
We got the COOL space mountain, though :P

Oh, they would have, if Disney hadn't thought ahead this time and bought all the space himself!
@_@ Dang! If only it was in California!! Never will I be able to travel to WDW again, for a while, but Disneyland on the other hand, atleast every month!
Sounds really fun!!
I've always wanted to be an imaginear, that was what I said I wanted to be, when my parents asked me 'what I want to do when I grow up'.
disnyfreek 03-31-2007, 05:48 PM I had heard about this, but i wasn't sure if they still did it or not. That's awesome that you got a chance to do that. If you don't mind all my questions, When is it ending? How much does it cost? what's the max number of people that you can have in your party? How can I make arrangements for it? Is there a link for it?
Kitri 03-31-2007, 05:54 PM Great info! Sounds like you had a good time
gabyta 03-31-2007, 06:21 PM what do you have to do to eat with an imagineer?

1). It will end sometime at the end of this year or next year, so make reservatios ASAP!!!!!
2). It costs about $60.99 per person for adults and $34.00 for kids ages 3-9 for lunch, which includes a four course meal and a "plate-like thing" which the Imagineer signs for you.
3). You can only have up to 2-10 people.
4). You can make arrangements by calling the normal WDW dining hotline which is 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463)
5). This is only held on Mondays(sometimes), Wednesdays, and Firdays.
6). Reserve up to 30 days in advance!!!
AND 1 last thing:
Ask about the Library in the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror. hehe
-Stitchco
rollercoasterfan 04-03-2007, 11:32 PM Thanks for posting this! I wish that I could do something like this. Was there any more interesting answers that you got? I am really curious about those kind of things!:wave2:
BonoGirl 04-04-2007, 05:45 PM Thank so much for the info. I think I will have to plan for this now.
RocketMountain 04-04-2007, 07:33 PM If you don't mind what was the Imagineers name?
disnyfreek 04-06-2007, 08:42 PM Ask about the Library in the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror. hehe
-Stitchco
lol more specifically what about the library?
Stitchco 04-11-2007, 01:35 AM Which would you like to know about? the imagineer's name or the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror Library fact(which I shouldn't be telling you anyway!!)
-Stitchco
PS- We might be going again, so tell me questions you would like answered when I go again. (Aren't you jealous of me)

The library thing.
(and yes)
Stitchco 06-01-2007, 01:38 AM SECRETS TIME!:
1). In the Library on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror behind the fake book case cover are real books! Disney had bought these for the library but decided not to use them since they were afraid people would try to steal them since they had valuables in them and were 1st editions.
2). This Fall Jack Skellington will be taking over MGM Studios at night with even scarier Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror theme.
3). Pocohantas will/might be closing soon at AK for a new show to start getting ready for the brand new BEASTLY KINGDOM!
4). Carousel of Progress might/will be colsing soon for a brand new Incredibles-themed roller coaster.
5). Dreamfinder might/will be coming back to Figment's Imagination ride before EPCOT's big 25 year birthday party!
6). Illuminations might/will be getting a grand finale for EPCOT's 25th birthday!
7). Rafiki's Planet Watch might/will have a big refurbishment done-Ratatouille themed area instead.
8). The boats that cicled Discover Island WILL be coming back as a bowed-lunch character meal.
9). Expedition Everest has made it possible for them to start working on Beastly Kingdom!
10). Animal Kingdom WILL be getting a new lantern-light show in late 07 or early 08!
11). Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular will be closing soon for a brand new Indy attraction-has to do with the forth installment of the Indy series.
12). In late 07 or early 08 Muppets will have a new attraction.
13). Califonia's Block Party Bash will be coming to the Studios soon.
14). FACT- The reason they got rid of Tarzan Rocks was because the Broadway Tarzan was in competion because of it.
-Stitchco(more to come soon!)

Why would they use valuable books instead of junk?
2). This Fall Jack Skellington will be taking over MGM Studios at night with even scarier Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror theme.
Very cool! Any chance this might happen at Disney's California Adventure, too?
3). Pocohantas will/might be closing soon at AK for a new show to start getting ready for the brand new BEASTLY KINGDOM!
Beastly Kingdom? Really, this time?
4). Carousel of Progress might/will be colsing soon for a brand new Incredibles-themed roller coaster.
No! Not my beloved Carousel of Progress!
5). Dreamfinder might/will be coming back to Figment's Imagination ride before EPCOT's big 25 year birthday party!
Isn't that this year? Looks like they're a little late with that one.
6). Illuminations might/will be getting a grand finale for EPCOT's 25th birthday!
Really, is Epcot's birthday going to be a one-day only event? Disneyland's 50th birthday lasted a year and a half.
7). Rafiki's Planet Watch might/will have a big refurbishment done-Ratatouille themed area instead.
Ok, now that sounds cool.
8). The boats that cicled Discover Island WILL be coming back as a bowed-lunch character meal.
Nice.
9). Expedition Everest has made it possible for them to start working on Beastly Kingdom!
Seriously? Beastly Kingdom?
10). Animal Kingdom WILL be getting a new lantern-light show in late 07 or early 08!
Will this be replacing something?
11). Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular will be closing soon for a brand new Indy attraction-has to do with the forth installment of the Indy series.
Something like the ride at Disneyland?
12). In late 07 or early 08 Muppets will have a new attraction.
Good. The old one is beyond stale.
13). Califonia's Block Party Bash will be coming to the Studios soon.
Yawn.
14). FACT- The reason they got rid of Tarzan Rocks was because the Broadway Tarzan was in competion because of it.
When will DCA's Aladdin show be hitting Broadway?
Maribeth 06-01-2007, 01:38 PM So more people went to WDW to see Tarzan Rocks! than went to NYC (or wherever; that's the only place I've ever seen a Broadway show..) to see Tarzan on Broadway? That's kind of funny, and it just goes to show that that was an AWESOME show and I know my family will miss it. :( I loved that show we went to see it EVERY time we went to WDW.

Somehow we always managed to skip that one. Something about all that Phil Collins music, I think.
Anyway, wasn't The Lion King on Broadway at the same time as the show in Disney's Animal Kingdom?
Maribeth 06-01-2007, 01:45 PM I guess the show couldn't compare to Broadway, so there was no risk of Broadway losing business.
We just liked the rollerblading monkeys :D
RocketMountain 06-01-2007, 08:20 PM Don't count on the Incredible Roller Coaster. Disney did not get the contract for Kuka's robotic arm technology for the Incredible's ride.
This photo shows how the arm would of worked.

You know, as cool as that looks, it has absolutely no place in Tomorrowland. Send it to Six Flags, where it belongs.
Disney, please bring Tomorrowland back to its original purpose: Showing us visions of the future. Not movie tie-in comedy shows and thrill rides.
RocketMountain 06-01-2007, 09:24 PM The Incredible roller coaster was not to be built in Tomorrowland. It was planned for California Adventure. A warehouse was going to be built behind the pacific wharf. The warehouse was where the Incredible family trained. The ride would have had 5 different levels of intensity. You could choose between Jack Jack the gentlest version to Mr Incredible the most intense version. The engineering behind this ride would of been amazing.
I agree about Tomorrowland :(

I got the Tomorrowland information from this post:
4). Carousel of Progress might/will be colsing soon for a brand new Incredibles-themed roller coaster.
EragonFan 06-03-2007, 08:10 PM Thanks for posting this information...I love learning almost everything and anything about Disney.

How does that thing even work?
Anyway, dining with an imagineer sounds so fun! I'd love to have a job like that, playing around disney!

Anyway, wasn't The Lion King on Broadway at the same time as the show in Disney's Animal Kingdom?
Yes, The Lion King was in Fantasyland, but just like with Tarzan, they had to close it down. Mickey's Philharmagic is now where The Lion King show use to be. In fact when The Little Mermaid comes to broadway, they're going to close down Voyage of the Little Mermaid at MGM.

Nemofinder 06-18-2007, 03:19 PM Im happy about the Indy ride, and ya know I dont mind all the pixar stuff, but perhaps they should find another place for them,
I have a few ?'s for the CM
1.)Umm, I was reading the back of my cereal box and it said that Mike and Sulley would be starring in 5 different attractions, I only count two, well three if you count the character meeting in MGM across from the ABC eatery but should the DCA atraction count beacause it was released last year?? Should we expect new Monsters Inc. rides??
2.)Ask if Jack (skellington) will take over The WDW Haunted Mansion

They can't close carousel of progress, that is one of my favorite rides/shows. Apparently they are focused on changing or getting rid of all the classic rides that walt came up with and loved, great job disney. Even if they can't make the incredibles ride I am sure they will make another one considering there has been alot of rumors saying they will change it.
Oh did you hear how they were going to change the jungle cruise? Well they were going to have one point where they get out of the boat and they go to different ways and eventually there paths lead to the same places and they get into the boat. Kind of like the great movie ride, I didn't get too much info, becasue they got rid of it because it costed too much.

Yea I heard about the jungle cruise idea as well. And they are still thinking about this idea too. And I'll ask yer question when I do go.
Anyone want me to ask the imagineer a question? Remember I'm not sure how much they can answer because it could be any type of imagineer. And also, I already know that they have a few roller coasters on their minds for WDW.

Wildcat 01-04-2008, 08:55 PM A few comments:
The Incredibles coaster-like attraction was proposed to be using the KUKA Robotic arm. When you got on the ride, a robotic arm would reach down and grab the pod you were in, bring you upward and you would begin the ride. However, there were some setbacks. One of them was that Disney was afraid that the arm would not be able to sustain holiding that weight when you were lifted. I agree. America IS the fattest country in the world.
If Disney should have gotten the contract to use the Harry Potter characters, they would have also gained access to use the KUKA Robotic Arm for a maximum of ten years. These KUKA arms were also proposed to create robots that drove around the park, controlled by a nearby Disney Cast Member. The robots would be themed around Disney-Pixar's new movie, WALL-E. I think this would have been the coolest, almost like little Push the Trashcan's running around Tomorrowland.
If you look at the sign for Animal Kingdom, you will see a Lion, Elephant, Triceratops, a Gazelle, and lastly a Dragon. Bingo. Which creature is NOT represented in the park? The Dragon. Beastly Kingdom was to be like a magical realm of dragons and unicorns, mythical creatures. I would LOVE to see this go into Disney, as it would be a HUGE hit with drawing even MORE crowds to AK. Then again, Busch Gardens in Tampa has Dragonland, and Universal's Islands of Adventure has the Lost Continent section. I think that one: Disney noticed these areas and decided a third mythical realm was pushing it, two: the budget was out of reach at the time, and three: Harry Potter was on the rise.
My last comment has to do with the Boat attraction at Animal Kingdom. I, honestly, do not believe it should return. You have the Jungle Cruise over at the Magic Kingdom, and it would almost be like a repeat of Jungle Cruise. I like the concept of maybe a Character Breakfast on a boat that circles the river going around Discovery Island. Oh my goodness would Disney make a killing. How cool would it to be on a boat, eating breakfast, looking at the foundations of the Tree of Life, the peak of Everest, and hear the music coming from all the little critters crawling around the park? Disney please agree to this concept, but please make sure it starts before the park opens!

I have a comment on your Beastly Kingdom idea Wildcat. I had asked the imagineer about why they decided not to include Beastly Kingdom. That person told me that they planned on trying to make a movie to make this area a popular 1. However, this plan had failed. The same imagineer told me that they had enough money to make the Beastly Kingdom. Although I feel stupid for not asking more about it.

I highly doubt that, but I guess we will have to wait. Right now characters come out and great guests on these boats.
9). Expedition Everest has made it possible for them to start working on Beastly Kingdom!
Not sure how expedition everest will have anything to do with beastly kingdom..
10). Animal Kingdom WILL be getting a new lantern-light show in late 07 or early 08!
Are you speaking of the Rivers of Light AK night time parade?
11). Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular will be closing soon for a brand new Indy attraction-has to do with the forth installment of the Indy series.
Never heard of this.. but sounds cool! I hope it happens! (or the actual ride goes in..)
12). In late 07 or early 08 Muppets will have a new attraction.
I have never heard of this rumor either.. and trust me I read lots of rumor places. ;)
13). California's Block Party Bash will be coming to the Studios soon.
Next year! Woot!
14). FACT- The reason they got rid of Tarzan Rocks was because the Broadway Tarzan was in completion because of it.
Maybe that was part of it but Tarzan was a little outdated compared to Nemo.
I responded to each rumor. I know this was posted a while and some of this might have happened. This is a really interesting thread! I wish I could dine with an Imagineer.. unless you consider yavn one - but he didn't work on parks.

Stitchco 01-05-2008, 12:41 AM I'll answer more later slinky since I have something new for all those who go or will go to WDW to post. However I can tell you this much:
Dreamfinder they are still trying to come up with a new way to bring him back and perhaps keep Dr. Nigel Chaning (forgot the last name of him so give me a break please) Post more when I have the chance. So busy and so little time.
-Stitch out for dinner. (if you would like to ask something or post please do so after the beep) - Beep -
EtnaGreen 01-05-2008, 12:48 AM Why are they changing carousel if almost all the people on here and the people I talk to love it? Since they are getting rid of all the classic good rides Mr.Toad's wild ride, lion king show, ariel show, food rocks, cranium command, and now muppets, which one do you think they will change or get rid of next? If they were going to change a 3-D movie, why didn't they change honey I shrunk the audience that is really old and out of date?
If they want to make a kingdom of mythical creatures, why not make it narnia themed? Oh and aks them if they are going to make that restaruant by the muppets either a ratioulle restaruant or a muppets restaraunt ( i have heard both).
