I have decided to make a thread for everybody who is new to the site (and existing users who have not yet discovered it) about reputation points and such.

Reputation points are points that you lose or receive when other members comment on your posts. You can see your reputation and your points by going to User Control Panel (User CP) and go to options, then click the option that says things about your reputation.

Once you click that, every time you go to your User CP you can access your reputation. A red box next to a message indicates that a user disapproved of your post. A green box indicates that they did approve of your post.

You will see the thread that your post was in and that date the reputation was given. You will also see their comments on your post. For example, somebody might disapprove of your post and say "Bad posting style", or "Offensive post, please be nicer next time".

You can give other users reputation comments by looking at their post and clicking on the scale-looking icon at the top right-hand corner of the post. You will then be asked if you approve or disapprove of the information posted. You can then add comments, but please do not post your member name!

Keep in mind that the reputation is what a certain set of people think about a certain set of words. If you get a bed reputation, please remember that. We don't want you flaming!

Make sure that you check your reputation often; it can tell you how to improve and if you have improved in your posting style.

If you get a bad reputation for flaming or making fun of another player's thoughts, I suggest you go back and apologize so you might get a good reputation in return! The last thing you want to do is edit that post, for then they would be giving or taking away points for nothing!

Always be sure to never tell your reputation points to anybody. They are to be kept personal. Would you really tell a stranger what grade you got on your report card? The same applies to reputation points.

You can't give a reputation to the same post. So make sure you're careful about what you say!

You also can't give a reputation to the same member after a certain amount of reputation given to other members (does anybody know how many reps. it is? If you do, please PM me and I will add it and thank you in the thread:))
NEVER ever ever give somebody a bad reputation because of another post. Be fair-we're all VMKers, right?

Maybe. Then if somebody posted something mean on your rep the person could say "that wasn't nice to add to my rep" or something.

I just learned you can put a character instead of a red or green dot when giving reputations, and that sometimes your reputation will be visible automatically (without choosing that option).

You can tell them your points, but it's optional. The reason I said you shouldn't is that in most cases, the person with less feels worse when they hear the higher one and announce theirs. Just do it in PM & you're okey-dokey.

There is no really good reputation point total, it's based on what you think. I think 9 and up is reasonable, but i don't want to hurt anybody's feelings.

1. I don't believe there's a limit, but my "theory" is at five. Just my theory, though!

2. I believe when you get close to a 100 mark (ie: near 100 points, near 200 points, etc.) your reputation status sentence is "so-and-so will become famous soon enough", although I'm not quite sure.

I'm not necessarily "famous", and I don't know what that means, LOL. I think the higher up in reputation points you get, your sentence changes, but that's my opinion.

Based on many other messageboards that I've seen, I'm pretty sure 5 "Mickeys" is the max.

Oops, you're right. That was just my personal opinion, anyway. I just noticed that it says something about fame, but there's not much of a "famous" put into it. It is simply the comment. It should never be used as favouratism, as some use it.

Oh my gosh, i logged in my user name today and found i got a bad rep on saying how i liked a dish at Disneyland's Plaza Inn and got this stupid comment along with the bad rep:
"Boo anything at Disneyland is horrible"
Use the reputation to help encourage other players by giving good rep and comments (but if you have to give bad rep, tell them how to improve) instead of getting kicks out of putting stupid comments like a coward. I personally don't find this funny at all, especially if kids received these kinds of careless comments.

I think it would be nice if the forums would reveal who gave you rep and some people would think twice and seriously before carelessly giving bad rep.

If a post is incorrect or false i would post a reply and would expect the same from others if i posted false info. If people have an honest and fair criticism, then they would post a reply, If someone wanted to have fun to heckle someone or say something incredibly mean to say for liking a certain dish at Disneyland, they would use the bad rep feature so they could endlessly make offensive comments to others.

that's a good question. i don't know how many, but i do know that bbalman, ashleym, cimorne, and mrgenie have 2 mickeys while becky has 3.

Actually, Nedakh just received three mickeys yesterday :) You get 2 Mickeys at 100 points and 3 mickeys at 200 points. I'm not necessarily at 300 yet, so I couldn't tell you if 300 makes 4 mickeys...

Check the "Home" page of this website by visiting http://www.vmkforums.com, then, while logged in, look for the number of rep power points you have. It will say "Rep Power:" and a number.

If you get a pluto in your rep box, that means the person either has there rep. disabled and gave you rep, or has so little rep points that thier rep points they want to give, or take away from you, don't count. ]

So any pluto heads you get, neither give, or take away your rep.

Rep Points:
This indicates the amount of points you have based on positive, negative, or nuetral reputation given you by other members. You find this under User CP.

This indicates how much power you have to effect another user's reputation points. For instance, if your rep power is 1, and you give another user positive rep, their rep points will increase by 1. You find this on the home page.

i have no clue at all! i think that if you have a bad rep for a few days without any good on top of it, the bad multiplies! and the the goods make up for the bad rep that multiplied over the days! and vice-versa for good and then a bad!

The amount of points added or deducted is based on a person's rep power. Moderator can delete rep give for the wrong reasons.

MrGenie has 3 times the mice as I do so his rep counts more than mine.

I think the reason we use a red square for negative reputation is that if you made it a cute little smiley then people wouldn't know it is negative, and they might even be inclined to try to get negative reputation so they could have it. We certainly don't need to encourage that. :rolleyes: Thanks for the suggestion though...we're always trying to improve the site!

Evil Kid Bug's Reputation is SO low, red isn't even affective, so they use orange..LOL. Anyways, the Pluto reputation was not supposed to give you rep. That's quite odd.

well if you use the search button and look for thread on reputation you'll find your answer there.

since i'm answering though, goofy appears instead of mickey when that user's reputation is turned off (meaning you can't leave bad or good rep for them at all, they have no score.) mickey shows up to indicate you have good rep, and how many mickeys you have means how many good rep points you have. pluto shows up in your recent reputation instead of a green dot or a red dot when the user who left the repuation doesn't have enough rep power to change your rep score whatsoever.

no clue what donald is for. this would be a good time to use the search button, say for "donald reputation".

You can post lots of wonderful stuff and hope that helps.

You have to ignore rep. It is only a tool that lets you know what others think of you. The best tool for that is by asking other people what they think of you.

If you do not want to see your rep then:

Go to User CP
on the left is Edit Options and click on that.
Reputation is at the top and to turn it off click and uncheck the box.

You not see your rep and be very happy as this is the first board I have been on that uses rep points. I was very happy without the rep points.

This is the exact reason why we disabled everyone seeing who gave them rep. If a rep comment violates one of our polices, contact a mod so they can investiage.

I think that it would be nice if people would leave a message for why they give you the approve or disapprove. Also, I think everyone should sign their title to their reputations points the give people. Because i do not think it is fair for someone to go around giving a bad rep the not leave a message or name . . . . like this idea???

I agree with part of it. I like the suggestion of haing to put message, but like the fact I can be unknown.

well i think everyone should be mature enought to sign thier name. . .then their will not ba so many people jsut going around giving bad rep for no reason .. . .becuse i think if they need to give you bad rep it should be for a good reason and not just because you did one thing wrong. . but whatever you like

I mostly agree, however, if you give bad rep for a legitimate reason then the person might get mad, even though there is a reason for it and you might be harassed. So, i feel you should sign your name if you feel like you should, but it should not be required.

Leaving names in rep - Not such a good idea.

Leave your name in a bad rep and you are likely to have "retaliation rep" directed at you. Leave your name in a good rep and it might foster "thank you, return rep".

I think rep should be isolated to use where anonymity allows the comment to be constructive for the intended recipient and leaves "rep for rep" possibilities out of the equation so that posters earn rep solely on the merits of their posts. Isn't that what rep is for?

Rep Power is the points you award or make someone lose when you reputate him in a good or bad way. Mine is of 8 :)
So, if I give you good rep, you get 8 more points, if I give bad, you lose 8 points.

The message thing is right. They have it.

this is rep. ppl give u rep and take it away depending if they like your post or not. i THINK this is the order of rep from worst to best- red dot, pluto, mickey head. goofy head is turned of rep. a mod has a thread about this so u could search "rep" or "Reputation" in the search bar.

Yours might be to difficult to follow for some. I had a reputation thread, and it used pictures. Some people are visual learners, and learn much better when they See a topic with pictures. (http://www.vmkforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22470)

The pluto head means neutral (sp?) rep, which means that the person probably has bad rep points, which will not impact your rep points if they decide to rep you... At least, I think that's how it is

I am not sure about this answer, so I decided to ask the question..

If you disable your repuation, but decide you want it back after some time, will you restart with your beginning amount, or go back to your amount after you left off. So say I have 130 Rep. Points, but I turn it off. If I turn it back on, do I get them back?

Yes you do, I have tried it before it will be fine if you disable your rep.

I think rep points is just a "game" to some. I have had many bad reputation points for who knows what. So please do not give bad reputation to anyone for no reason.

We know (many people have broken that rule and gotten the consequence) that this is important already but thanks for the reminder! And yes, reputation has been disabled temporarily, no questions asked.

Sorry for double post, but apperently "temporarily" is a very long time!
